Grilling in Bryce
 

I suspect that it is not allowed, but thought I'd ask anyway: Are there grills (charcoal) so you can cook out while at Bryce or Gr Canyon (north rim)? We are on a very tight budget this year, but not quite willing to stay home, so we were trying to think of ways to cook for ourselves most of the time.

We camped there a couple of years ago and there are fire pits at each campsite. The picture in this link show folks with an open wood fire in the campground.

I don't recall whether day use site have fire pits or grills but, I think they probably do. We pack a single burner propane camp stove in our luggage as well as a small propane lantern. We by disposable propane tanks on arrival. We use ours for coffee (we bring a small percolater) mostly but small meals could be prepared that way as well. The selection of food at the camp store in Bryce was dismal...stop at a store outside the park before arrival for a better selection.

I have no knowledge of the fire situation at the North Rim.

Thanks. Even though we have reservations (not camping) at Bryce & Gr Canyon, we are considering bringing 2 colapsable chairs, a cooler and a stainless steel coffee maker. Have you ever attempted to check such items (Delta)? If we could bring those items and find a way to grill out for dinner, we would be set. This is a real challenge for us this year and we are looking forward to it.

For less than $20, you can buy a single burner propane stove that will perk a pot of coffee (as Peterboy mentions). We pack a stainless steel coffee maker so we can set up the tiny propane stove outside our cabin/motel room or campsite so we can make our own really good (and very early coffee). We always bring a collapsible cooler. Chairs are a good idea too if you have room to pack them. You can purchase the small screw-on propane tanks at Bryce for the stove.

We (sharondi & I) have never had any trouble checking the stove, lantern & percolator. Obviously the propane tanks would be a problem but, you can buy those anywhere. The one thing we forgot was chairs and we wished we'd had them at Bryce's campground.

I use a medium soft sided cooler as my carry on and then empty the contents into a suitcase on arrival. we also pack another soft sided cooler in the luggage...one cooler for beverages, one for the foodstuff.

Also, We've never checked chairs but I have checked a good sized tripod so chairs shouldn't be a problem.

If you're not camping, check with the lodges because they may have coffee makers in the rooms. We're just back from Zion, GC and Bryce, stayed at the lodges in the parks and had coffee makers in our rooms.

One reason we like to bring our our percolator is
that we are coffee snobs and are almost always
disappointed with in-room coffee. Also can't
stomach powdery coffee "lightners". We'll rough it to
save a buck but won't compromise on the java.

peterboy: Wow, nice shots. You must be like me - family refers to me as the paparazzi. Re: chairs, my husband says that we should be able to bungi-cord them together and it shouldn't be any different than checking strollers and golf clubs.

Tally: I had looked at the websites and none of them listed coffee makers. Guess I'll just call to be sure about all of this.

Fire grates are available only at the North Campground Picnic Area.

I couldn't find anything about fire grates at the N. Rim picnic areas.

FYI:
After phone calls & further research I have found that coffee makers are provided at Gr Canyon North Rim and Bryce Canyon Lodge although they are 4 cup coffee makers. Guess we'll be taking our own. Also, after phone call the Bryce - there are grills at the picnic area about 1 mi from the lodge. No grills at Bryce or GCNR due to fire hazard (as I expected). I think our plan will be to check our 2 collapsible chairs and a cooler with a coffee maker packed inside. Any suggestions welcome!

Your question about trying to check some camp chairs has me thinking...with the bagage fees being charged these days, wouldn't it just be less hassle and cheaper to buy a couple chairs at Walmart, or somewhere, on your way to Bryce?

Dayle - That has become plan B. My husband in Plat Medallion on Delta so I don't think it will be a problem.
