Griffith Observatory in LA

While researching my upcoming trip to LA, a friend alerted me to the Griffith Observatory.
http://www.griffithobs.org/

Looks like it reopened not too long ago, and admission requires advance reservation (not unlike the Getty Villa).

Anyway, by looking at the website, I can't really tell what's there to see. Has anyone been and can enlighten me? I have a rather packed schedule while in LA, and will only try to fit it in if it's that great.

We went the first week it re-opened. While it's still free to get into the observatory, there's a charge to take the shuttle there. In order to ward off the anticipated crowds, one must take a shuttle. I would recommend going late in the day so you can view the telescope at night. It is well worth the trip!

also be aware that there are long waits to get on the shuttle up there for your reserved time.

i haven't been myself, but spoke to a couple last night who waited an hour for the shuttle!

i think it would be a worthwhile destination while you're in LA!

Can anyone elaborate what's there to see while there?
