Greyhound buses - are they on time?
 

This might be a stupid question - but it's been a LONG time since I've taken Greyhound. (Asking for my kid now.) In general, do they run on time? Anything I should tell him that he might not thought of? (Bus is from Worcester MA to Rochester NY.)

I don't take them all that often (usually from PA to NYC), but I would say yes, usually. Of course they are vulnerable to traffic woes, but I would trust the schedules most of the time. I do find that the passengers are pretty assorted, and I would be careful with my belongings, but that is common sense anyway.

I took first Greyhound trip since the 70s a few months .. Albany to Plattsburgh. The bus (having originated in NYC) was 10 min late arriving & departing, but kept the 10 minute delay throughout the trip, neither gaining nor losing any time.

I was surprised how nice the bus was - very clean, comfortable seats, and the passenger mix didn't seem to have any weirdo's, loud-mouths, or other n'er-do-wells as I'd expected. I put my airline carryon bag in the baggage compartment. I think the biggest problem for lost/stolen items would be at the bus stations themself .. just commom sense as already pointed out.

I'll probably try a longer trip soon.

Wow, seemed easy compared to flying - just head down to the bus station a half hour early, but the ticket (none of this "nonrefundable" business) and get on the bus!

The last time I took Greyhound, maybe 4 years ago, it was a 1/2 hour late for a 4 1/2 hour trip. Not too bad...

My daughter just took Greyhound for the first time to travel home for the weekend from college. The ride Saturday afternoon from Boston to NYC at 5pm was exactly as scheduled. Returning to Boston on Monday (Columbus Day holiday), was very busy so Greyhound would just load up buses and leave. No probelm at all.

I wasnted my daughter to get used to taking the bus, because it's the most economical way to go back and forth, and timewise is no worse than alternatives (Amtrak or flying if you factor in airport nonsense, etc).

In fact, I took Amtrak last year with my daughter on a few occasions and it was awful. Left late, and moved very slowly. Greyhound is a fraction of the price (e-tickets for Boston-NYC are $15 each way), and actually went smoother.

There are Amtrak bus routes, which can be cheaper than Greyhound and faster with less stops. I agree that Amtrak trains are prone to delays, at least here on the west coast.
