Greenwich Village Hotel Rec's

Looking for hotel recommendations in Greenwich Village for a 5-night stay in April. Prefer rates in the $200-250 range. We're considering the Washington Square Hotel but would like some other recommendations. Any ideas?

There are not alot of hotels in the village, so if you want to stay in that area the Washinton Square is probably a good choice.

Several other hotels in the area are out of your range.

If you would be willing to go a bit further south to the Wall St area, the Millenium is often available at $199 a night and if you book using the www.c21stores.com website you get a gift card to use at Century 21.

Hope this helps and have a great trip.

Thanks Travel Buff! We'd be open to staying in SoHo or Tribeca as well ... just trying to get more of a NYC neighborhood feel vs. the uber-touristy parts of the city. But like you said, most of the hotels in these areas may be out of our range ...

travelbuff is right - there are very, very few hotels in the village. You might want to consider Battery Park City - there is a new Embassy Suites, although I'm not sure about the price.

Also - perhaps the upper west side? There are a handful (although a small handful) of hotels up there that won't break the bank and won't make you feel overrun with tourists either. The two that come to mind are the Empire Hotel right across from Lincoln Center (which was just rennovated) or On the Ave, which is up around W. 79th.

If you want a more neighborhood feel agree to look at the upper west side. It's a mid/upscale residential area that has a bunch of moderately priced hotels (Lucerne, On the Ave, down to the Beacon or even the Newton if you want basic and inexpensive) in an area with tons of great inexpensive restaurants, good access to Central Park and two subway lines.

The areas you're looking at have some great trendy - but upscale hotels - but not a lot in the moderate/modest category.

The Washington Square (which is well located, nice but somewhat basic) is really the only hotel in the village with private baths aside from the W Union Square which is very pricey. The Larchmonthotel.com has one family room with private bath. There are some b & b's that rent what are equivalent to apts. that might fit your budget if you're just 2

As others have said, there are many other locations with hotels that are not as touristy as say the Times Square area or the area around Penn station. While more people are moving down to the financial center, I don't think at this point that staying down there will give you the neighborhood feel you're looking for.

The Hampton Inn Chelsea is one idea and the Park South is a nice smaller hotel that's affordable and south of midtown and north of the village.
parksouthhotel.com Check against prices on quikbook.com which are sometimes better.

In Chelsea, chelsealodgesuites.com will make you feel like a NYer with a studio apt.

Soho is great but the affordable options down there are not.
