Greenwich Village
Two 40ish women will be in NYC this Thurs-Mon, we are planning to have dinner in GV sat night and to take a walk around the area.
Any input..as in your favorite path to walk & a non run of the mill place to eat? |
Please indicate how much and what type of food do you like.
My favorite blocks include 9-12 Streets between Fifth and Sixth Aves. Beautiful residential architecture. Getting lost in the crooked streets of Commerce, Horatio, Jane, etc. They are doing construction on Washington Square Park, so that is out. The Washington Mews is one of the most charming streets in NYC. One short block north of the Park between Fifth and University, a cobblestone street that has small homes and small NYU classes that were once stables and carriage houses. |
Don't miss a walk on Mac Dougal Street and Bleeker. If you want a great snack do not miss Mammoon's Falaffel sandwich. It's Arabic food and the place is a hole in the wall but it's been there forever and is great. It also has other food but its not what I'd call a 2 star restaurant. But it is good food just no atmosphere. Good luck.

<i>The Washington Mews is one of the most charming streets in NYC.</i>
This was my late mother's most favorite street in the <i>world</i> |
You have hundreds of great dining options and dozens of wonderful walks -- which choices are best depends on your preferences.
Food -- type? budget? atmosphere? Walk -- shopping? architecture? history? |
There are quite a few different walking tours online but I think the best way to see the village is during the day. Foodsofny.com does a very popular eating/walking tour of the village.
Here are some self guided options. http://manhattan.about.com/od/neighb...illagetour.htm http://www.nytimes.com/ref/travel/TOUR-GV.html If you want a casual meal, Otto's at 1 Fifth ave. is an upscale pizza/pasta place right in front of Washington Square Park. Down the street, the Bar Next Door (attached to La Lanterna, an Italian rest) and North Square in the Washington Square hotel both have jazz on a Sat. night. Jane and Village are some other rest. options. You'll need a reservation. Some of these can be done on opentable.com |
Some of our West Village favorites:
Blue ribbon Blue ribbon bakery Strip House Home (they make their own ketschup) Cones-store made ice cream on Bleecker |

I've eaten at Otto, last year with my daughters, your right it is very good.Otto & Wasshington Square were all of GV that we saw though. Is Washington quare totally closed? |
Sorry about all the typo's!!
Thanks to everyone for your responses I'll check all the info out. |
I just passed it this week and looked like most of it if nto all of was blocked off. The arc and the fountain certainly were.
The city is doing something really stupid. It is moving the fountain so it will symmetrcial with the arc. I think they should erect some concessions stands on the west side of park for the few reamining drug dealers. Only the chess hustlers have been there longer. |
