Greensboro, NC

I'm going here on business for several days in early August. I'm doing all the research I can on the internet, but was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for places to see, places to eat, etc? And has anyone stayed at the Sheraton at the Conference Center?

The Grandover Resort is on I-85 between G'boro and High Point. Big $$$$$
High Point is the furniture capital so you might want to look at that. Winston Salem is about 30 min on I-40. Historic district, carriage rides, etc.

August is very hot/humid in NC so plan indoor activities in the afternoon.

There is the Greensboro battlefield in town. It's near the science center.

Greensboro has a minor league baseball team (the Bats). And you are only about 30 minutes from the N.C. zoo and Seagrove Pottery.

Have you tried the visitnc web site (I think it's www.visitnc.com but it could be .gov or .net)?

Thanks for the info. I'm coming from Orlando so I'm certainly used to the heat! Do you save any money by buying furniture there if it then has to be shipped to Orlando?

High Point, the furniture capital of the world, is just a few minutes away from Greensboro.

Within the past few days, someone put a bunch of links to High Point and Hickory (about an hour west of Greensboro) furniture places. If you don't mind searching this site, I know there has been postings on NC furniture (maybe a year or so ago). If you don't mind searching the competition, Frommer's has had articles on furniture shopping in NC.

For High Point furniture stores, Furniture Land South is the biggest. And I mean BIG. They do not take credit cards and are closed on Sundays. There is also Rose Brothers furniture and the Galleria (both on Main St.) Someplaces like FLS and Rose have 'destination' packages that will set you up at a hotel and a rental truck or will ship it to you. I don't know if it's a good deal because I live nearby and I'm buying furniture as the budget allows and taking it home myself.

You will love Greensboro. I lived there for 5 years and still miss it. Old Salem is enjoyable but it may be hot in August. Four Seasons Town Centre is a nice shopping mall. State Street is a nice place to stroll... boutiques and cafes. When I go back to visit, I stay with friends, but have stayed at the La Quinta on I40 near Wendover and it was fine. Also stayed at the Hampton Inn off High Point Rd... nothing special. Downtown has some nice museums and historical landmarks, too. Enjoy your visit. Winston Salem is a great place to spend the day or night also.

I lived in G'boro for the first 18 years of my life. I would recommend the O'Henry hotel. It is really nice and basically centrally located in G'boro. It is within walking distance of great shopping at Friendly Center. Hope this helps.

Green Valley Grill at the O'Henry is a good place to eat. It is also only about a five minute walk to Friendly Road shopping area.

Mason, your post won't help Celeste as she asked this question three years ago. But who knows, maybe someone else is looking for the same information

I've visited the Triad, and Old Salem and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts is a must see, it's in Winston-Salem. There's a Furniture Discovery Center (museum) in High Point that's really interesting and well done. When you see how much work goes into your sofa or dresser you realize why it costs so much. The North Carolina zoo is less than an hours drive in Asheboro and I think it's one of the best in the country. Huge, spacious exhibit areas opening onto a backdrop of beautiful sweeping pine forests. Also, the Guilford Courthouse (a revolutionary war battlefield) is worth a stop.

I don't understand how people like Mason come across a thread like this in the first place and then fail to notice the date when they decide to answer. This is OLD!!!

Well, maybe it will inspire somebody to abandon their plans to visit Disney World this summer and head to Greensboro instead.

i'm actually visiting a friend this weekend in Greesboro area - am looking for a nice restaurant nearby - she said best bet is to go to Hickory - she's lived in Taylorsville for 5 yrs. but I wanted to surprise her with a 5 star restaurant - I'm from NYC area and she's a NYC area transplant. is there anything comparable? It's her bday just wanted to treat her to something special.

Nobles in Winston Salem. Take I-40W from GSO to the 421N (old 40W) exit towards Winston Salem, take the Knollwood exit and go left. Nobles is at 380 Knollwood on your left just after you cross the bridge over 421N. Excellent restaurant.

SORRY! Nobles is on your RIGHT just after you cross the bridge over 421N. OOOOOPS>
