Great Things to Do In Chicago
 

Hello,

My husband and I are visiting Chicago for the 1st time in Sept. We already have a list of some sites to see but I wanted to get input from this site. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

drink/meal john hancock, day AND night

-rent bike to ride the path along the lake

-art institute (excellent restaurant also there)

-chicago cultural center.. free recitals and lots of good tourist info/maps, coupons, two-for-ones.

-marshall field's visitors booth upstairs at historic building for a guest coupon booklet ranging from free makeover to free cheesecake and coffee

-chicago architectural river tour

-eat at a riverside restaurant and watch the boats go by

-see one of the best native indian collections at the history museum

-millenium park

-aquarium.. etc. etc.

great photo opportunity at the planetarium with skyline of chicago from there.

-theater--second city comedy--dance-concerts.

one of my favorite cities. you have fab architecture, great food and waterfront... realy a nice combination.

There are all kinds of threads here giving you specific walks, lodging, restaurants. Do a search on Chicago- and then any specific interest word.

The Field Museum has King Tut during your stay. With an entry Gold Tut Pass you can see that section and general museum combo.

Many people have raved about the Segway tours if you tire of walking. And IMHO the BEST way to get a good feel is to do that or walk- a lot.

There are certain views in Chicago that are probably in few places on earth. For instance standing on East Wacker Dr. near the River and looking South through the canyons of skyscrappers down the wide avenues of LaSalle, Clark, or Dearborn. I especially like the canyon view looking South down LaSalle from East Wacker.

And regardless of what Arch. tour you take (most of those go down the Chicago River), you also might want to go on one short (it will take a few hours)boat tour that gets you outside the locks to look at Chicago from Lake Michigan proper.

It depends upon what your favorite things to do are. Do not forget there is great theatre. If Wicked is selling tickets for your time frame, I would not miss doing that myself.

There is also a strong neighborhood feel, bar, jazz, music, shop choices that are not that far from downtown at this juncture. You may want to visit Lincoln Park or River West- River North areas.

Oh yes, Marshall Field's is in the process of change to Macy's. If it still is doable as Field's I would go to get the visitors gift etc. as stated above. But it may be too late by Sept.

You may want to get a visitors go discount for entry into 3 or more venues for less $$ if you are going to go to many listed on their service.

There's a terrific Frank Lloyd Wright house on or near the University of Chicago campus.

Shedd's restaurant Soundings is good for lunch- if you choose to do that. Shedd's interiors are something, and not just the live species to see there. The walls themselves are artwork.

Adler Planetarium has Jim Lovell's spacecraft on exhibit, it just opened this week. He was here as well and the entire looks very interesting.

If you go South to Hyde Park, you will want to see the Museum of Science and Industry. It takes a day, so I think you might want to hold that for a second visit. It's architecture is awesome as well. When I was a girl I always wanted to go where the ladies were holding up the building on their "heads". LOL !

M.of S&I has the U-2 German submarine, the coal mine, and a doll house not to be believed among 1000s of other things. But it is not grouped with the others, and is a bus or el ride about 50 blocks South.

I agree with many of these suggestions. If you're looking to save some money on the Field Museum, John Handcock Observatory, Art Institute, etc the Go Chicago Card is good. You pay a fixed price to get into a bunch of chicago attractions. http://www.gochicagocard.com

Visit the Green Mill at night an uptown jaszz club that is also a kind of living museum.

For a romantic dinner try North Pond--great skyline views, out of way local which leads diners through the park. I also like Cyrano's Bistrot & Wine Bar which is more affordable but full of romance too.

Definately check out the bar--Signature Lounge in the Hancock for an awing view.

The Architectural cruise offered by Shorline Sightseeing is not to be missed as well.

Yes. Marshall Field's becomes Macy's September 9-10. You may be here for the big changeover or be one of the first to see the new Macy's.

Celtic Fest is going on in Grant Park the 16-17 if you like Irish Music it is a manageable fair.

On the Macy's front, our suburban store already has the Macy's sign up "hidden" by a sheet printed with Marshall Fields on it-some of teh receipts, depending on what department you are in say Macy's and our new credit card came in the mail the other day so I think the changeover has happened except all the hubub "celebration".

The change is underway and taking place over the next 8 weeks. All marketing switches to Macy's as of Aug 1, and the stores are changing signage, etc. throughout August. You're right though, as of Aug. 1 it will be switched for all intents and purposes.

Should be an interesting process to watch assuming you can do it without crying. I'll have to check out keepitfields.org and see what they're saying on there!

I would say that you should take a trip on the "EL". Be on the look out for the peeping toms! Some desperate little pervs has been spotted taking pics of the riders..

Don't forget Chicago style blues. And how about tickets to The Blue Men Group? Now there's something "different".

The Lincoln Park Zoo is very nice. Also, the Chicago Architecture Foundation offers tours that are very interesting. We took a modern architecture tour that we weren't too excited about at the time but we wound up having a great time.
You have to try Giordano's stuffed pizza with sausage. It is the best pizza ever!
