Great Pool Resort

Alright, I need help from all you travel experts out there!

My wife and I would like to go away for 3 or 4 nights in early October. Why that time? Because that is when we have help from the grandparents! :)

Our only requirements are: (i) that the hotel/resort be somewhere warm in October, (ii) that it have a spa, (iii) that it also have a great pool(s) with a lazy river, and (iv) that it be in the U.S.

I know this is VERY specific, but anyone's help/recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated! We are new parents who are desperate for some good R&R! Thanks in advance!

Grand Wailea, Maui
JW Marriott, Orlando
Grand Cypress Hyatt, Orlando (no onsite spa)
Hyatt Ceromar, Puerto Rico
Atlantis, Bahamas (not US)

Here's a link from the Carribean site:

A while ago, I visited the Phoenician Hotel in Scottsdale Arizona and talk about pools, I think the thing was amazingly huge with different paths. In October, Scottsdale s/b still be pretty warm and you could take side trips from there if you wanted, just a thought.

Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas - 3 pools (one with waves & a beach) and a lazy river.

1. the "lazy" river pool at mandalay is really too fast - and just goes in a circle. but their giant wave thing is unbelievable if you like swimming in waves and their rooms are really nice for a gigantic hotel.

2. the hyatt cerromar (puerto rico) turned into condos a few years back, so make sure to call ahead to see that you can visit it from the hyatt dorado. also the spa is not great - very basic.

3. the hyatt poipu (kauai) has an amazing spa and a great river pool and is in the u.s.

i like it better than grand wailea, it is smaller and more hawaiian feeling. it also has a neat fake beach since its unsafe to swim at the real beach.

4. the grand wailea (maui) has great slides and other whiz-bang pool stuff that nobody else has. the spa is very nice. the rooms and service are only ok, but you can swim at the beach here.

There is a place in San Antonio...it's either a Hyatt or a Westin or a Wyndham. Can't remember, but it has a lazy river and a pool that has a sandy area....and a spa.

pepper is referring to Hill Country Hyatt, in San Antonio. Great place.

The only place I an think of is Atlantis. I know it is ot the US but not very far from Fla. There are great pools, inclding a lazy river, a beautiful beach with full serice, it has a spa, it is warm and there is a casino...just a thought. My husband like Atlantis for a fun quick getaway we find 3 nights is just perfect there!

The Ritz Carlton in Orlando. JW Marriott is next door with a river pool and you have access to all the JW facilities. The ritz is calmer and less crowded. The spa is fabulous and there is plenty to do! Great shopping, dining and a romantic stroll in Epcot after dusk! Another rec. is Sea Island in Georgis. You fly into JAX. GREAT SPA GREAT HOTEL ( the lodge).

Ft. Lauderale: Pelican Beach Resort
The pool is not "great" but they do have a very nice lazy river & a spa that has opened recently or is soon to open. October in FLL is beautiful. Everybody says "Don't go in Oct b/c of hurricanes!" but we have been going for years & always lucked out. 3-4 days wld be perfect for you.

Another place in Florida that I like in October is Marco Island on the West coast. Fly into Ft Myers. We used to stay @ The Hilton right on the beach.( ask for South West view). I hear there is a new hotel....something, something...Beach/Ocean Club across from The Hilton that is supposed to be very nice ( Do a search on MI & you will find it). I like MI b/c of the beach & the sunsets. Good golf nearby. Another place a lot of people like ( but not me) is The Marriott on MI. I find the rooms small. And, even though it is "on the beach"(just North of The Hilton actually) I don't get the same "on-the-beach-feeling" as I do sitting out on my balcony for morning coffee @ The Hilton.

Sorry...Re: Marco Island: no spa or lazy river @ The Hilton at least not when we were last there.... Don't know about Marriott or The "new place"! I think the new place has aspa.

No lazy river but the Arizona Biltomore has a fantastic spa and pool.

I'd recommend the Westin "La Paloma" in Tuscon. It has a great slide, swim up bars, golf, tennis and kid activities. Sometimes you can get great packages too! We loved it a few years ago with our kids!

Gulfport Mississippi, near Biloxi.
Nice town, close to New Orleans if you want a day trip, shuttle to the outlet mall and a fantastic pool area.

At Disney World, at the Yacht Club and Beach Club Resorts, they have an AMAZING pool called Stormalong Bay - it has a lazy river, a part of the pool that has a beach, a great slide and more - you do not have to have disney tix or go to the parks to stay there and the pool is like a water park itself - let us know what you choose!

Thanks to everyone for the help! Being as we are from Florida, we are looking to go out-of-state, but all the hotel choices that were mentioned in Florida certainly meet the bill otherwise.

We are currently leaning towards the Hyatt Hill Country resort in San Antonio. The place looks beautiful and we've always wanted to visit San Antonio.

Does anyone else have any other recommendations not already mentioned? Thanks again!

just curious, why restricted to USA?

afeldman May 31st, 2005 10:13 AM

It was hard enough to convince my wife to leave the state. I am not going to try to convince her to leave the country! :)

wow May 31st, 2005 11:25 AM

Why didn't say upfront that you did not want Florida?

Pointe Hilton at Squaw Peak, Phoenix Arizona. Great lazy river. Was there in 1999 and the casitas were lovely, with easy access to the pool area. However, the rooms--but not the pool area-- now get mixed reviewss on Tripadvisor.
