Great Packable Picnic Lunch suggestions for Mt. Desert Island?
Looking for ideas of any sources for hot or cold non-vegetarian takeout picnic food that will keep for a couple of hours in an insulated lunchbox with ice pack, for places to be visited while car-touring. I've had trouble finding any places that open around 8AM for takeout, when I'm usually starting out for the day's activities. Creative picnic-food ideas welcome!--can be either brunch or lunch-type food.

This month you should find fresh blueberries for sale by the side of the road on your way to MDI. Buy a cup of vanilla yogurt at the gas station. Mix some of the blueberries in.
Snack: apple and cheese stick. According to a google search, there are several fresh produce farms in Bar Harbor. Look for a farmstand. Sliced cucumbers, pepper, and a touch of vinegar. It's not unusual to find a convenience store, the old-fashioned kind, that opens early. There's a Hannaford supermarket in Bar Harbor that should open early. Buy a few slices of deli meat and maybe some prepared salads. I don't care for the prepared sandwiches at our local Hannaford but you might luck out with cold rotisserie chicken. Some of the old-fashioned small markets we found in Maine carried fresh crabmeat and other yummy things for lunches. Look for whoopie pies!!! |
We rotate between 3 places, all open by 8 at least:
Morning Glory Bakery Cottage St. bakery Bagel Factory Cottage St. Bakery probably has the most choices, especially for non-veg. They even supply insolated lunch bags, though we always use our own. ~Liz |
BTW, all 3 are in Bar Harbor...
