Great (as in big) movie houses the size of the Ziegfeld don't exist in Manhattan anymore - they were too expensive to run. Theatres showing indie/foreign/repertory films include:
Film Forum; Film Society of Lincoln Center-Walter Reade Theatre; IFC Center/Waverly; Anthology Film Archives; Lincoln Plaza Cinemas; Landmark Sunshine Cinema; MOMA; among others.
Check out listings at timeoutny.com and villagevoice.com

I can recommend Waltz with Bashir, Wendy and Lucy, The Class, which might all be playing still next week - although I'm not sure about The Class.

The great movie palaces are all long closed. You might go for a tour of Radio City Music Hall (which started out showing movies PLUS stage shows - and showed movies alone until the 1970s).

I saw many movies at Radio City in the old days. For some reason, I particularly remember Jumbo.

I grew up near one of the great movie house's in the Bronx

The "Lowes Paradise" on the Grand Concourse.

Saw many James Bond films and before my time, Frank crooned there!

Sadly they tried to make it into a quad cinema.

Film Forum, Angelika and Landmark Sunshine are good places for art films on Houston St. You should buy tickets in advance online as they tend to get sold out.

I also happen to like the Paris theater which is next to the Plaza hotel and usually plays foreign films. It's currently showing the Reader with Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/31/ny...pari.html?_r=1

Just an aside, that's where I saw Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet! I don't remember the theater itself at all (other than the location).

I have always considered the Paris to be the most comfortable movie theater in the city. Downright luxurious compared to most!

Thanks everyone Paris and the Houston Street theatres are just what I was thinking of.

I found this list and it made me sad....
