Great hikes between LA and San Francisco?
Hi - We are planning a coastal trip in April driving from LA to SF. One of the things we love to do is hike. We mostly like day hikes with big scenery potential - coastal, mountain, meadow - whatever. Do any of you have favorite hikes that you consider "not to miss" for us hikers? We will hike any exertion level. Would like to do a few hikes as we travel up the coast to break up the driving and usual tourist stuff.
Thanks!!! sue |
Do the perimeter trail at Point Lobos. It's just a tiny bit over 6 miles if you do all the loops. Park outside the reserve and walk in. Best scenery EVER.

Anyone else?

I was going to say exactly the same thing, so I will!

Montana de Oro state park (near Morro Bay) has some nice hikes.
The climb up Bishop's Peak in San Luis Obispo has great views (ask locally for directions to the trail easement). It's been a long time, but I remember an nice hike at Big Sur going back into the Ventana Wilderness along the Big Sur river. Big Basin state park N of Santa Cruz has some nice trails in the redwoods. Haven't done it myself, but others have really enjoyed hiking in Channel Islands NP (take a boat from Oxnard). If you get a clear (not smoggy) day, you might consider hiking Mt Baldy NE of LA. |
Before I read any of the replies I thought "Pt. Lobos." Also, while you are in the area you might want to check out Pacific Grove to see the ice plant on the path along the beach. They should be in bloom by mid April. You can call the Chamber of Commerce and ask if they are blooming yet. Have fun.

There are some really fine hikes in Carmel Valley at Garland Ranch. Its about 8 miles inland of HWY 1 on Carmel Valley road.Just be aware that the hikes are mostly up and down through Oak,and Laurel woodland with fine views of Carmel Valley as you ascend up the hills.
Here is a link with info on the park, and a PDF file with a map link. http://www.mprpd.org/parks/garland.html |
Hi again - thank you so much for all the replies. This is just what I was looking for. sue
