Great getaways near Chicago?

Four girlfriends get together annually for a long weekend. This year, because of schedules, it's easiest for us to meet in Chicago. We all know Chicago well, though, and were thinking that we might be up for a drive (not more than 2-3 hours) to visit someplace special in the area.

Does anyone have ideas for a good weekend spot?

Thanks!

Galena if you prefer shopping in a small historic town

Madison is great in the summer

If you would like to spa, check out Sundara in the Dells. It is our family favorite and they have great, huge rooms that are perfect for girlfriend type stays.

What time of year?

GALENA is great. Stay at an inn or B&B.

The Steamboat House is great. http://www.thesteamboathouse.com/

You don't say when you're going (month?) or what you all like to do. Or where you are coming from.

A long weekend in Chicago, you couldn't possibly get bored.

But, if you like music and it is summer, head out to Ravinia. Bring a picnic and a couple bottles of wine. Take the train there and the train back into the city. Lovely evening:

Milwaukee also usually has a series of summer festivals on the lake. Wonderful. Of course, Chicago has several of their own, including Taste of Chicago.

You might check the tourism boards for both cities.

If it is "unwinding", Galena is ok. But I found it very "touristy".

Love Chicago!

Second the Ravinia suggestion but get there early.

Don't know what your tastes are, but west of Madison there's Spring Green, with an interesting tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's house, studio, tower AND nearby an outdoor theater with very good productions.

For something completely different from that, I'm surprised no one yet has mentioned Wisconsin Dells. Not my thing, but a lot of people think it's fun.
