Great Falls or Helena?

At the end of September we are planning a drive from Bozeman to West Glacier. We had planned at first to overnight in Great Falls on the way, but have concerns about driving route 2 west that time of year. The alternative plan so far is to overnight in Helena on the way up, and then head up 141 and 83 toward West Glacier. (We won't be coming back that way, as this is part of a larger itinerary that includes Idaho.) DH and I would welcome all input regarding heights, narrow mountain roads with no guardrails, any other caveats. We realize Glacier NP has tricky weather and some closed or limited roads that time of year. We've visited Glacier extensively in the past, so thought Route 2 from Great Falls, if an easy drive, would give us a view we hadn't seen before. In general, we will feel our way, with a goal of exploring Flathead, Whitefish, etc. as well. Thanks, in advance, for all advice!

My choice by far would be 141 and 83 through the Swan Valley. VERY scenic drive and a good 2 lane road with no passes, no high mountain roads etc. Highway 89 or I 15 from Great Falls is pretty boring till you get to East Glacier.

Thank you, John! This really helps. Great Falls appears to be a beautiful city. Perhaps we should schedule it for a future trip.
