Great deals/suggestions for Vegas?

Never been to Vegas and are considering spending a long weekend there very soon. Would fly from Detroit..any suggestions on good places at good prices right now?

I've spent some time the last few days checking rates for hotels and they're down about 30-40% due to the WTC events. Try the Rio (part of Harrah's) which is 1/2 mile off the strip or the Flamingo Hilton, which is center of the strip. Their websites are quoting $55 and $59 weekday rates and $120 weekend rates for Columbus day weekend. That is cheap for this time of the year. I've noticed web-based discounter sites such as Expedia have not reduced their hotel rate quotes yet so make sure to call the hotel's direct number and ask for their "best deal" before you commit.

I heard the hotel that looks like Venice is as low as $59.00 mid west, a real steal. It has all Suites right on the strip.

I just spent last weekend in Vegas for the first time in 13 years! Got a great rate (I think) for The Venetian at $124. The room was HUGE! Three of us shared the room and never touched each other. Imagine a bathroom large enough to accommodate three women getting ready at one time - and room to spare! I got my rate on Hotwire.com.

There was a person checking on prices at the same time we checked in - they offered him a room for $119 - on a Friday night!!!!! unheard of!!!!

Make it very soon. Rates are already beginning to creep back up as occupancy rates are rebounding. Not rapidly, but they are back up from the low of 42%. Last weekend was 73%. So those low rates won't be around too long.

If this is your first trip to Vegas, STAY ON THE STRIP... anywhere between Treasure Island and Mandalay Bay. My favorite area is around Mirage, Paris, Venetian, Bally's, etc (as opposed to the area around MGM, NYNY, Luxor, etc)

There are some TRUE finds right now, but mostly offered thru the hotel itself. Also, if National airlines leaves from your area, they are partly owned by some Vegas hotels and they are offering dirt cheap airfare right now (i think the best deal requires you to leave on a Tuesday though).

I've recently heard of rates at The Venetian $59 midweek, $89 weekend which is the best deal i've recently heard about. If you can't find any decent rates, i think one of the best values on the strip is routinely at The Flamingo or Bally's.

Canuck,

I live in Detroit too, I'd check MLT vacations. They offer wonderful deals to Vegas from Detroit. phone # is -1-888-call-mlt. website- www.mltvacations.com.
I've been checking periodically myself. GREAT DEALS!! I'd suggest Aladdin, Treasure Island, Mirage, Bellagio,Monte Carlo and Paris are really nice hotels.
Good Luck!!
Thanks Jan..I called the number you gave but no deal today! If I want to leave from Detroit next Fri. and spend 3 nights at the Riviera it will cost $428 per person...although on the website it misleadingly says there are packages for $99.99....

Check out cheapovegas.com for great (funny as well) advice on hotels and gambling etc. lvol.com is a great resource as well. We have reservations for next weekend at the Bellagio and have heard people are starting to come back. Heard The Rio had some deals as well at the Venetian.

Canuck -

If you have never been to Vegas DO NOT stay at the Riviera. It is far from the main part of the strip and old.

The farthest north on the strip you want to stay is Treasure Island or Venetian. We are going this weekend and booked a room at Venetian for $119. They wanted $150 and my husband said no. Then they countered with $119. Try calling them direct.

This being your first trip, I would recommend staying at one of the following hotels; Bellagio, Venetian, Paris, Ceasars Palace, Mirage, Treasure Island. Mandalay Bay is good too but it is very south on the strip which makes it more difficult to get to other places.

For airline, check out Southwest.

Good Luck.

Lynn

:-)
