Great clothes at discount price
 

Me and my daughter (18 yo) will be in NYC in August. We are both crazy about good, stylish and classy clothes. Any suggestions where to go to find them at reasonable prices?

Honestly go to ebay.com. I have gotten new Ralph Lauren, Eddie Bauer and Kasper suits on there for about 75-95% off what I would pay in any store outside the Internet - tags still on them.

Luv2fly has given you good advice (although I'm not sure Jeffrey's is discount). Also remember that there may be great sales in August at the dept stores. Look at Henri Bendel (5th & 56th) & Barney's. Barney's has a place downtown called Co-op too. Loehmann's used to be great. You may find some good things still. Urban Outfitters may have some good things for your daughter. Also have a look in Anthropologie in Soho.

PS Get a copy of New York Magazine when you arrive. They have a page on sales & bargains which often lists special sales going on that week.

Mclaurie is right - Jeffrey's is definitely not discount, but they have some excellent sales in the summer (and are best known for their amazing designer shoe selection - the place to go if you want Prada or Manolos).

Century 21 is THE destination for designer clothes at a discount. But I find it hard to take because of the crowds. Try to go early.

I agree that your daughter will probably love Anthropologie in Soho, or there is also one near Union Square, on Fifth Avenue.

Your daughter might also like to wander around Nolita, which has some funky stores with young designers(including a couple of consignment shops where you can get used designer clothes at bargain prices). It is near Soho, just head east of B'way on Prince or Spring, then walk up/down Elizabeth or Mott.

Good, stylish, classy at reasonable (or relatively reasonable!) prices -- Century 21 for sure. Give yourself tons of time, maybe more than one visit, it's really too much at once (and new things come every day).

Good, stylish, classy, not necessarily a bargain -- Nolita, as someone else suggested. Elizabeth & Mott Streets below Houston have the nicest boutiques in Manhattan. And like other stores they do have sales (but nothing's like C21).

As mentioned above, the crowds at Century 21 are often a real nightmare. I'd strongly suggest going on a weekday if possible, and as early in the day as you can manage.

Also check out Broadway north of Canal Street up to around Bleecker. Particularly on the east side of Broadway you'll find many many stores that your daughter will enjoy.

While Jeffrey's is a fabulous store, it is not for the faint hearted. Very expensive.

You've gotten some great advice! My favorites out of all of those listed would be H&M (priced similar to Old Navy but cutting edge, not preppy) and Century 21.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Bolton's, which is a good option as well and they have stores all over the city. My favorite is on 34th and 5th. Also I think Daffy's is better than Century 21 and again there are several locations, 34th and Broadway, 57th and Lex, Broadway near Canal St., 57th and 7th and Madison at 45th.

Daffy usually has a wide selection of things and during the summer has great sales.

Macy's is also another good idea, if you sign up for a Macy's credit card you get a discount for the day on anything you buy and they are always having good sales these days.

Another fun stop would be Victoria's Secret at 34th and 6th.

One of my favorites is Filene's Basement. There are two locations: 79th Street & Broadway, and 6th Avenue at 19th Street.

I recently bought two gorgeous coats there at $30 apiece.

Its got every designer name there is,Its about an hour out of the City and we are going to make a bee line for the place when we arrive in Sept. Manufacturers (usually in midtown, occasionally in Soho/Nolita/ Tribeca sometimes open up their showrooms for a few days to clear out merchandise, sometimes at at half of wholesale prices (75% off retail)

Check the websites or (magazines when you get here )of New York magazine and Time Out NY for some listings.
Register (free) at NYsale.com for a list of upcoming sales. Sales usually last only a few days , and many are cash only, no try ons.

Carrie was shopping in Century 21 :)

Absolutely H&M. She will love it. There's a huge one on 5th Ave. and another near Houston downtown.

For higher end I would go to Loehmann's on 17th.

I am with OssieV as far as shopping Woodbury Common Wins hands down. Roughly about 300 designer outlets people come in on a daily basis on buses from the port authority in NYC. The website must list the time schedule from the city , it is one of the largest outlet centers in the world.
