Great Basin National Park...hiking reports

Lovely photos and report, thank you. We will only have a few hour on the way from Ely to Salt Lake City in a couple of weeks time to see something of the Great Basin Park - we are fairly fit Aussies, wrong side of 60 but active. What would you suggest? Am a little scared that altitude may be a problem to walk far, but would love to get a feeling of the joy you shared!

Carrabella, my recollection is that the hike to the bristlecone pine area is not as long and very feasible from the parking lot at the top.

Hi Carrabella, So glad you enjoyed the website :-) I second Michael's recommendation for the Bristlecone Trail (4.2 miles rt, 1000 ft of elevation gain), you should be able to hike it with no problems. I would also highly recommend the Alpine Lakes Loop Trail. The trail is only 3 miles roundtrip and has little elevation gain. The scenery on both trails is incredible...especially the glacier. Whatever you choose, I am sure you will enjoy the park. If you have time be sure to stop at the Ward Charcoal Ovens...fascinating area. Ooh, i'm so envious. We attempted to hike, or even slightly explore Great Basin early last july (05) but due to heavy snow pack we weren't able to. I totally plan to return someday and your pics are a great inspiration. Thanks for posting.
