Grayline Tours in Portland

Is anyone familiar with the tours offered in Portland? We are trying to decide which one to take. We have time ( 8 days) and wish to see as much as possible..then we will rent a car and see what the tour didn't cover, or go back for more of what we liked best! Thanks.

Portland, Oregon is a small city (though not as small as tiny as Portland, Maine). It's easy to see it on your own. If you are in good walking shape, your first stop should be at Powell's Books and pick up their walking tour map. You can also hop on the Portland Street Car and take a loop from NW Portland through downtown and down to Riverplace. Get off, walk north along riverplace and waterfront park. Get off at the other end of the streetcar on NW 23rd or in the Pearl District and walk around there, too.

For a guided walking tour, see PortlandWalkingTours.com . You can also take an "underground" tour.

Consider also a river cruise, such as one on the Portland Spirit, which is a floating restaurant as well.

I would only do a grayline tour if you aren't able to walk far and/or it's terrible weather out.

If you book your hotel through Portland
Visiters Assoc you get 10% discount on Grayline- they also give you some good discounts on dining at some good restaurants

I hear the Duck tours (like the very popular ones in Boston) are coming to Portland...

beachbum Sep 5th, 2006 10:02 AM

They're already here, Icuy. My wife and I saw one a couple weeks ago. I'd agree, a Ducks tour would be more fun than Grayline. But I also agree that you can see much of Portland by foot and/or mass transit.

How long will you be in town, sumreknot? From your other posts, I know you'll only be in Oregon for a week, and I think you've already got an aggressive itinerary, without even considering Portland.

Beachbum and lucy--That is not what I want to hear. We did the duck tour when we lived in Seattle (inlaws wanted us to be the guinea pigs) and hated it. SO cheezy!!!

Jeez, mms, after living in Seattle for 46 years we decided to be tourists and LOVED the duck ride!

Who was it on the European board who said, "One's man's cheese is another man's fromage"? ;-)

Scarlett Sep 5th, 2006 12:56 PM

LOL, they have the Duck in Montreal too. That one would definitely be Fromage :D

LOL Bob:) Yes, different tastes. My inlaws have lived up there for eons also, and they wanted us to be the guinea pigs (their words!) when we moved there. It is a running joke in the family now.

I think what's bothering mms is the name, Duck Tours. She'd probably much rather it be called Beaver Tours. ;-)

Fodorite018 Sep 5th, 2006 01:22 PM

LOL Beachbum! Now if it WERE the Beaver tours, it might not be so bad;)

dsquared Sep 5th, 2006 04:18 PM

Yikes! You do realize that only Oregonians (or former Oregonians - that would be me) will get the Duck/Beaver jokes!

Scarlett Sep 5th, 2006 06:15 PM

LOL dsquared..you're right !
