Graveyard Tour Halloween New Orleans

Hi,
We will be in New Orleans for Halloween weekend. I haven't been able to find anything on this site about the graveyard tours. Are they interesting, if so, which one should we take?
Thanks, this is our first time to New Orleans,
Amy
Amy,

We were in NO 2 years ago on Halloween weekend and had alot of fun. They have a short but fun parade down Bourbon Street. Don't miss it. There are several walking tours that are either include graveyards. I did the one that included the garden district, which was great. Their cheap and you don't need reservations. However, the most fun, interesting and scary tour was the haunted ghost walking tour at night. You meet at Madame? (can't remember) vodoo shop. Chills still go up my spine just thinking about it. Again, cheap and you don't need reservations. Check out local tourist info, when you get there. I found both listed there. Sorry, I can't remember the names. Have fun!

Check with the places Danielle mentioned. At least one of the tour operators runs special late night Halloween tours during the two weeks leading up to Halloween. There was something in the paper about it the other day.

Just a word of warning. The locals HATE late-night tours and are very likely to be less than friendly to those who are on the tours. The local paper ran a story last week about tour participants leaning on doorbells at 11pm, being extremely loud and crude, etc. Remember that the French Quarter is a neighborhodo and not an amusement park...I'd opt for the earlier tours and then head down to the clubs at night.

Thanks to everyone who wrote, we leave tomorrow. Still thinking we may consider the night graveyard tour, there are 6 of us so it will be a group decision.
Thanks again!
-Amy

Amy, this is a minor point, but I don't think the word "graveyard" is used much in N.O. as most of the dead are housed above ground. I think you'll have more luck asking around for a "cemetery" tour.

Have a great time.

Thanks, maybe I should do a search on cemetary tour instead and see what has been written.

Also, my friends asked why the locals are upset about the night cemetary tours. I know that it was posted that people lean up against door bells, but I can't quite get the connections of why they would be doing that anyway....any reason? The locals are giving the tours, I assume...???
Thanks again, "cemetary tour"
Amy

Amy - It's the residents of the French Quarter who are upset - not locals in general. I live in the FQ and have not had an unfortunate incidents with the late night tours, but my house is apparently not on their route. The problem is that the residents feel the tours are too big and cause too much noise late at night. The ringing of the doorbell incident occurred when someone in a group leaned against the house and rang the doorbell. The resident was inside the house nursing her small child and found it disruptive. I think another incident involved a tour member leaning against a window and cracking it. Tourist activities can be distracting and annoying in a residential neighborhood - and, unfortunately, people tend to forget that the Quarter is a residential area. For the most part, French Quarter residents are aware that our neighborhood draws a lot of tourists and spawns tourist activities. We live with that day in and day out and are quite tolerant, but we knew that when we moved here. At night time, we just like our streets to be quiet. That's the lowdown on the late night tours.

Meg, thanks for the explanation.
-Amy

I agree with the above posters... We have visited NO and their cemetaries many times. I feel that you should keep in mind that this is real not just something for your amusement. The residents are not only tolerant but very southern and polite they enjoy having visitors, but I would much prefer doing one the tours earlier in the evening and then going to dinner and some of the clubs.
have fun

New Orleans for Halloween is a blast! Try and get tickets to Anne Rice's Halloween Ball. You can get them at Ticketmaster locations. It's wild!
