Gratuity included on tab
What a surprise -- ordered room service at the Hapuna Prince this weekend, and (thankfully) noticed that a 15% gratuity had already been added to the bill.
I consider myself a rather experienced world traveler, but had never seen this on a restaurant or room service bill before. Will be on guard from now on! |
I have never noticed it NOT to be a room service order. Usually I see 17%. I also always see it printed in most room service menu about the charge.
|
Agreed...I've never seen it not there. I think it's pretty standard for room service and has been for some time. I feel like a miser signing the check and returning it to him/her with a smile and nothing more, but, well...it is there!
|
Every room service order that I have placed in the last five years (probably 30 - 40) has had a service fee (gratuity) included. As NoName says it is usually 15-18%.
|
It's common and, in my experience, it is always stated on the room service menu.
|
I feel just awful not giving them something even though it's included. Usually end up giving some more --
|
Which is exactly the point of putting the gratuity on the bill. People are used to tipping and even if they added 30%, most would still feel they should add "something".

Aloha auntiemaria..
Don't forget about the "Delivery Fee" too.. 15% gratuity is pretty cheap these days for room service.. I love to order room service and wanted a good cheeseburger to split with my husband in Palm Springs a couple of weeks ago but when we factored in all the fees and they had the nerve to want to charge us for a split plate charge too..we declined..the fees, gratuity and split charge fee worked out to something like $12 for a $14 burger.. |
Forget the room service gratuity, we're still trying to get over sticker shock from their room rate increases this past year. Last year the HBP's room/breakfast hot deal was $220/nt, this year it's over $300!
