Grand Rapids to Traverse City - Where to stop?

I have about 8 days total for sightseeing from Grand Rapids (3 nights there) to Traverse City (where I will be picking up a tour).
I would like to drive along the coast. What are some of the more interesting stops along the way? I was looking at Muskegon but don't know too much about it or the area north of it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi Lolo. Can you please clarify how much time you want to spend driving up the coast? The drive can easily be done in one day (if you do not stop too much). Or are you thinking you want to pick a town or two on the coast and do overnight stays on your way to Traverse City?

Be sure to check out Holland and Saugatuck which are both close by to Grand Rapids and each worth a trip.

I was thinking of leaving Grand Rapids and going someplace (maybe Muskegon) for 2 nights, then up to maybe Ludington for 2 nights and then to Manistee (2 nights). Then drive to Traverse City. That way we would have some time to explore.

Holland and Saugatuck are both south so I wasn't going to consider them. but I might if it were really worthwhile. What would draw me there?

Depends. What interests you? What disinterests you?

Saugatuck is worth a stop for a night or two if you like quaint resort towns with lots of shops, galleries, restaurants and a beach nearby. I am more familiar with the Traverse City and Leelanau Peninsula areas so I'm not sure about Muskegon, Ludington and Manistee.

Glen Arbor (right next to Sleeping Bear Dunes) and Leland are my favorite resort towns and worth a stop at some point on your way to TC. There are great hiking trails and Leelanau Peninsula has wonderful wineries too.

Or instead of exploring the area south of TC you could go a bit farther north and see the very popular towns of Charlevoix, Petoskey and Harbor Springs.

You don't mention when you're doing this trip? Anytime in the summer or in the fall through mid October is great, but after that there's not much going on.
