Grand Hyatt-SF (Union Square) on strike

Strike for 3 days on now. Hotel is staffed by management with protesting union members outside.

And the protest is as loud as usual, at least in the mornings when I pass them on the bus :)

So far only Hyatt.

Yes their bullhorns are said to disturb those within a two block radius. The Grand Hyatt is at Union Square, Post and Stockton.

I understand it is to be a sort of roving strike of a few days duration (3?) per hotel, with 31 potential targets, until they can get a contract they like. The biggest issue is health insurance costs, and I'm astounded at what they already get...$5 co-pays (mine is $30 or $35 for a specialist, same company) and free insurance for employees, $10/month for dependents. Geez. I'd sure like a deal like that!!!! We pay about $300/mo for our coverage with Hyatt. With coverage costs as well as co-pays escalating every year, I have no sympathy for their "plight". Even less than zero sympathy considering what the economy has done to the hotel industry the past couple of years!

Could it be that we are subsidizing their coverage? Aetna is going to get their money somehow, and if that's what those employees pay, I suspect we are being asked to make up the difference. I vote management strike!! :D

Hyatt is proposing that the employees pay $35 per month for their health insurance. The employees currently pay 0.

This isn't a strike against Hyatt per se. The union (Unite Here) represents all the unionized hotels in SF and the agreement, if ever reached, will be drawn up with all the corporations involved. Personally, I'd love to see a lock out!
