Grand Central Terminal: Where should we take a short train to?
 

I will have visitors from out of town but are on a budget. I thought it would be neat to get on a train for a short ride somewhere. Is this expensive? Where should we go?

I'm not sure what you are looking for. You can take the subway to a wide variety of destinations, all for a relatively cheap fare.

Metro North has a variety of day trip packages for relatively reasonable rates. Here is a link to their site that has some information about the options available.

Just a quick addition, you might want to consider a trip to the Bronx Botanical Gardens. Depending when your guests are coming, things may be starting to bloom (although there is the hot house for a fee at all times of the year and it's lovely to walk around at all times). The trip from GCC is about 30 minutes. Here is a link to the Metro North site for the Botanical Garden, but you don't need to make special arrangements, you can just take the train to the station and it's a quick walk to the Garden's entrance. Thanks for the replies. Sorry not to check back, but I was out of town. The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens sounds just about right. Not too long a trip, which give us time to do lots of other stuff that day too. How far of a walk is it from the subway to the gardens? Will we have a hard time finding it?

Oops! Just realized, travelkitty, you mentioned the BRONX Botanical Gardens. I was thinking of the Brooklyn Gardens. Don't they have a lot of cherry trees that will be blooming in April? Which is nicer do you think?

I would recommend the NY Botanical Gardens (in the Bronx) over the Brooklyn one. I've been to both many times. The Bronx one is huge and more serene, while in the Brooklyn one you can still hear street traffic! You can bring food into the Bronx one...I had an impromptu picnic with my family there on Easter a few years ago. The Brooklyn one does not allow food. I believe that both gardens have the beautiful cherry trees.

Another great thing about the NY Botanical Gardens is that it is across the street from the Bronx Zoo!
