Grand Canyon with kids
Late last night the hubby and I decided we wanted to go somewhere for President's Day weekend. Not much notice, but thought we would try. Every trip has started here, and you all never disappoint!!!
Our first thought was a trip to Grand Canyon. We have decided to go to the South Rim and stay as close as we can, enjoy the village and views. That's about as far as we have gotten. Travel: We are in San Diego and are trying to decide how to best travel to the South Rim. To save money we were thinking about driving, but, not quite sure what route we were going to take. To maximize our time at the Grand Canyon we thought a side trip to Vegas wasn't a good idea. 8 hours+ is a bit long for a 5 and 3 yo. Any thoughts or suggestions? Accommodations: We want a hotel with a private bathroom, but we also don't want to spend a lot either. Thoughts? Things to do: We want to see the views, but do you have any other suggestions for other activities that are kid friendly. We like to hike, but nothing too crazy for the kids' little legs can't handle too much. Thanks for all your help!! |
In GC, check out Yavapai, Kachina, Thunderbird and Maswick. They are pretty much like a traditional motel with two queens and a private bathroom and might be in your price range.
The least expensive place we've stayed close to GC is Cameron Trading post. A decent motel behind the trading post about a half hour east of GC village. There are also places in Tusayan. |
I should have mentioned that you need to keep an eye out for the weather. Snow is a possibility so I would want to have a plan B. Perhaps Death Valley or Sedona.

Good point emalloy. They should definitely be prepared for winter weather at the GC as it is ~7000' elevation.
You should expect overnight/early am temps in the teens or low 20's F, and daytime highs anywhere from high 30's to as warm as mid 50s if you get lucky. I think there are better places to visit in mid Feb with young kids. Death valley or Zion NP would be better options if you want a national park. |
I did not consider the weather.... thanks for your input
