Grand Canyon weather early Dec.
 

I will be in Tucson Dec 1-3 and thought I might drive up to the South rim of Grand Canyon National Park and stay a couple days. I realize there's no timetable for blizzards, but what are the odds of a major snow storm that early in the winter season? I am from Conn. and accustomed to driving in the snow, but I'll be alone on this trip and would just as soon not have to deal with more than six inches in a rental car. (Maybe I should play it safe with a 4-wheel drive?) From there I'll be driving to the Phoenix airport.

I do know that they will close the roads in the park temporarily during a bad snow storm so the best thing to do is keep an eye on the weather before you leave Tucson.

I've gone in this timeframe, and it is WONDERFUL. Beautiful lighting, no crowds. Plan your day carefully since it gets dark early, but don't hesistate to go. :)

Yikes, just looked at your timeframe, only 3 days?? Frankly, not enough time, to get all they way up to the Grand Canyon and back in my opinion.

Usually cold (especially at night) but clear ... chance of a fast-moving snowstorm though, I recall being up there over Thanksgiving once in a heavy snow, but figure maybe 10% chance.

You'll be able to tell a couple days in advance so just don't go up there if a storm is moving in from the Pacific, and don't worry about lodging, it's easy to get a room when you arrive that time of year.

3 days is plenty of time. Yo can get from Tucson to the GC in 5-6 hours. Leaving early, you could easily be there by early afternoon. Spend 2 nights (should be plenty of time, unless you are avid hikers). If you don't do any hiking, spend 1 night. See all of the points west of the Village the first day, then the ones east of the Village the second day, spending the night in Flagstaff or (my preference) Sedona.
