grand canyon/sedona activities

My sister will be going to the Grand Canyon next month with the rest of my family (but not me) and has asked me to help her find some things to do while there. I believe they will be staying in Sedona. She is 34 and single, pretty athletic and loves outdoorsy, adventurous-type activities. I think she just wants a day to herself, away from the craziness of the family :)

She had mentioned rafting, but the rafting tours I'm finding on my searches are several days long, and she would rather do something that would just be for a day, or even a half-day.

So I know this is a bit vague, but can anyone recommend any activities/tour companies that you have done/used? We're starting from scratch here, so anything would be helpful. It doesn't have to be rafting, but that is an idea of what kinds of things she would like to do.

Thanks, and any advice would be appreciated!!

If she has a car, she could go up to Page, a little less than 3 hour drive from the Canyon a little more from Sedona and take a half day smooth water trip on the Colorado from Glen Canyon Dam to Lees Ferry. This would make for a long day away but give her a bit of a river ride. If she stayed over night there she could also visit Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. Or go to a little east of Flagstaff and visit Walnut Canyon. There are biking opportunities in the Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon area. I'm not sure about rafting in Oak Creek, but there may be places to rent kayaks or canoes for a get away.

The pink jeep tour in Sedona is great. We went on the Broken Arrow tour and it was the highlight of our trip to Sedona.

Tell her to take a trip to Jerome. I had read about it on these forums and we really enjoyed it.

I absolutely second what nlg said. Pink Jeep tours are incredible. We also took the Broken Arrow tour; can't recommend it enough.

It's not rafting but Oak Creek Canyon has a number of wonderful day hikes you can take. Will need either a Red Rock Pass (from the Forest Service or America the Beautiful Pass from any federal recreation area) to park at the trailheads without getting a ticket. Also in the canyon is Slide Rock State Park where you can slide down the rock in the river. Nearby are Palatki Ruins and Rock Art site, Honanki Ruins site and V-Bar-V Heritage site (all run by Nat'l Forest Service. Montezuma Well and Castle (ancient ruins) run by Nat'l Park Service. Your America the Beautiful pass will get you into all the above with exception of the state park.
