Grand Canyon itinerary help, suggestions
We will be visiting the GC in late March spring break. Driving from Vegas to South Rim for two days. My son enjoys Native American history and we were hoping to go to the Navajo Reservation in Cameron. According to Mapquest going to Cameron and then entering the park from the east is only one hour longer than from the south. Does it make sense to do that on the way to the park? We are spending two nights in GC and then on to Phoenix for spring training and need the fastest way to make a game so exiting east wiont work. Planning on hiking so our time is full during our visit. Is there any other Indian reservation you would recommend visiting instead that is along the way? Thank you

No, not coming from Las Vegas. Enter from the south, leave thru the east. . I can't give any reservation recs.

Just a thought - and it would be a long day - but if you wanted to add something to your Cameron visit - another hour and a half is the Navajo National Monument - where you can see where the ancient Cliff Dwellers lived - and 20 miles beyond that - on the hiway - is spectacular Monument Valley.
http://www.nps.gov/nava/index.htm and http://explorethecanyon.com/grand-canyon-vacation/maps/ If you got up early - you could drive out to see the sunrise on the way to Cameron - and then on to the Navajo National Monument - where you could do some hiking. Again, it would be a long day - but you would see some amazing sights. Also - I may ask - who is he going to spring training with? |
If you do decide to go east on 70 to 89 north, you can stop at Wupatki, an ancient Native American ruin area just off the hwy. Then stop in Cameron. I can't think of a real Native American site there, but Cameron Trading Post does have a very large collection of Native American made articles for sale (and lots of non native articles) and may be owned by Native Americans.
I think the approach for the park from that direction is wonderful, there are lots of places to pull off for spectacular views. The trading post is just a very short distance north of rt.64 where you turn to go into the park. |
I re-read your post. Since you need to do a straight shot to Phoenix, then make the entrance from the east. It will be OK for your purposes and not that much of a detour.
