Grand Canyon in January?

Can anyone tell me what the weather is like in January? Would it be a good time to visit? Also, any suggestions for nice hotels/resorts?

Thanks!
Deb

Cold and snowy. The Canyon is beautiful in the winter. You can stay at the rim, but national park lodges are just that lodges -- not resorts. Others like to stay in Tusayan at places like the Quality Inn and Suites. For resorts you'll have to head for Sedona or perhaps a nicer hotel in Flagstaff.

It's also icy, so be careful walking on the trails around the rim. Bring shoes with good traction. But if you can stand the cold, it is an absolutely gorgeous time to visit the Canyon.

I've been there in late January and mid March. Both times there was snow on the ground, and drove through some nasty storms. Because of the snow, there was ice on the trials so unless you had special spiked boots, you couldn't even take a little hike down. We did take the rim bus and make all the scenic stops.

don't forget a LOT of services are completely closed so options at mealtime are slim!

I've never noticed any services curtailed for winter. Winter is a wonderful time to visit and I would definitely suggest staying rimside at either Kachina or Thunderbird Lodges...reservations can be placed through Bright Angel Lodge. I prefer Kachina Lodge on the second floor, wonderful views from your room. Dining rooms are open for all meals at Bright Angel and El Tovar.

For me, anytime is a good time to visit the Grand Canyon. I've been there in late January and mid-March and enjoyed it tremendously on both of those winter trips. On the January visit a few years back, the weather was unseasonably warm (50s), but it snowed 6 inches when I was there in mid-March. Hopefully, the weather will hold up while you are there, but it will be gorgeous in any event. The upside is that you will essentially have the canyon to yourself.
