grand canyon in early November
My husband & I are planning our trip the first week of November (6 days, 5 nights) going to Phoenix for the Baseball Winter league for 1-2 days, then off to the Grand Canyon. and maybe see family in Las Vegas. We want to taken the train that goes thru the South Rim of the Canyon & stay at least 1 or 2 nights. Has anyone done this? what did you think of the train ride? thx!

Never took the trip. Seems to be an expensive alternative compared to driving your own car. http://www.grandcanyontraintour.com/...CFQ9VgwoddlJn8
November seems to be off-season. |
The tourist train goes TO the rim, not along the rim, if you expect to see the canyon off the train it won't happen.
If this train is the only way for you to get to the canyon, go for it. Alternatives are renting a car (I recommend a stop in Sedona going from Phoenix) or there may be Phoenix airport shuttles to the South Rim. |
GC train ride is generally considered one of the two biggest tourist traps in Arizona, the other being the Skywalk.
Reasons for this harsh assessment include: 1) Far too expensive compared to just driving the 60 miles from Williams up and back. Several hundred bucks vs gas money for 120 miles of driving. 2) Takes more than twice as long as driving, and it's a very boring trip. You never see the canyon from the train since the tracks run parallel to the road and the terminal is across the street from a hotel and shops. 3) On the day trip you are there for just a few hours mid-day, the worst possible time to view the canyon. You are looking at the overnight packages I assume, these are even more expensive than making your own reservations separately. 4) There was another good reason but I forgot it ... Reserve a room on the rim, drive up on your own and save hundreds of $$ and have a better trip. |
Really isn't all that much to see from the train. High desert scrub and pine forest dominate the route.

I agree with everyone else, drive yourself. You will see the same scenery and won't have to worry about any train schedule!
