Grand Canyon Float Trip-5 yr. old?

How large are the rapids? We went last month on a rafting trip down the Arkansas River in CO with class III rapeids and brought our daughter who just turned 6. She didn't paddle, but held on to a handle and did just fine. We were on a 4 hr. trip. The rafting companies will state a minimum age on their website. I hope this helps.

The only way to go down through the Grand Canyon is over white-water areas that would not be appropriate for a 5 year old , IMO, and the rafting company may not even take children that young. Finally, these trips are generally booked a year in advance. If you still want to try for a white-water company which goes through the canyon, a good place to start is the US Park Service’s website for the Grand Canyon at http://www.nps.gov/grca/index.htm, and in particular the portion of the site on white-water rafting trips at http://www.nps.gov/grca/river. You will find links to commercial companies here. Companies must be licensed by the park to offer trips through the national park portion of the Canyon, and all licensed companies are listed on the site.
The only smooth water float trips I know of go through Glen Canyon, and start at the Glen Canyon Dam at the head of Lake Powell in Page, Arizona.
The trip is very beautiful, and there are no rapids at all, It is no nearly as dramatic as the Grand Canyon, as Glen Canyon is no where as deep; however it does have good cliff walls and lots of wildlife. It is a good alternative if you don't want t encounter white water. You also get to see the dam which is pretty interesting. If you are staying in or near the Grand Canyon National Park, then it is basically a full day tour from the Grand Canyon, going out in the morning and returning around 4 pm. There is a bus pick-up just outside the entrance to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon Natl Park, I believe there are other pick-up points.

When we did the Colorado River float trip out of Page, AZ there was a 5 year old on our raft. He had the best time. He kept telling his Mom to take pictures.
There are NO rapids on this float trip. It's calm water and they have to use motorized rafts to get you down the 14 miles of river. You are bused either from the S. Rim Grand Canyon or from Page, AZ. It's a LOT cheaper and a lot shorter day if you do this from Page, AZ. You are bused down thought the tunnels they used to build the dam. At the base of the dam you get off your buses, have to put on a hard hat to walk down to the rafts & they take your picture before you board. Children under 12 have to wear life vests. There's one stop along the way to use the bathroom and take a short hike to see the petroglyps.
This trip does NOT go into the Grand Canyon but it's very scenic and I would highly recommend it.
