hello gotravel & scarlett! i'm looking to do a weekend in charleston and possibly savannah. i was thinking october/november, and looking for suggestions in accomodations. i'm not looking for anything to expensive, but nice. hampton inn? best western? although i've heard about the b&b's... i won't worry about the restaraunt suggestions, because it sounds like i can't loose in charleston! ;-)

Actually otto, anybody can be loose in Charleston. Whether you lose or not depends on knowing when to fold 'em.

I think Oct/Nov is a good idea as far as not being there in the heat of summer, the way we were last June.
We stayed at the Hyatt so I am no help as far as B&Bs but I did notice many lovely buildings ..the latest seems to be the Mansions at Forsyth Park, look into that, I am interested for myself also!
I have not been to Charleston since I was a child, so I am no help to you there, sorry :)

scarlett..thanks. i'll look into the hyatt...is savannah a feasable day/overnight trip? or should i stay in savannah and do charleston as the day trip?

We were in Savannah for a weekend, 2 nights. I think that was sufficient, maybe one night and a full day would be good.
From all I hear ( and vaguely remember) Charleston is the city that you should spend the most time in.

Otto: The Meeting Street Inn is the best of both worlds - it is run as a hotel but gives you the effect of staying in a B&B. Complimentary wine in the afternoon, a decent breakfast if you don't wish to visit one of the local restaurants...right across the street from the Market. Parking is convenient and the rooms are set up in a traditional Charleston way - high 4 posters, etc that open out onto a typical courtyard complete with wrought iron chairs and fountain.

what's the word on the francis marion?
i have a good rate, but some reviews on here say it's dirty, but they are from 2002. on another site, it says there was a $14m renovation?

Otto, both cities are fabulous, you need at least 3-4 days in each, to do them right.......... BUT seeing as we can't always do what we'd like :-(, I know, I would recommend the Hampton Inn in the historic area of Charleston. Reasonable, very nice........ We have also stayed at Charleston Place Hotel, and in a Comfort Inn and a Holiday Inn across the bridge, outside the historic area (because they accepted pets.) I don't know anything about the Francis Marion. However you mix'em up, you can't go wrong in Charleston and Savannah! :-)

Hi otto, I stayed at the FrancisMarion Hotel a month ago in Charleston and I was very happy with it. The room was very clean. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. The bed was wonderful. Only negative I can think of is the bathroom sink does not have a counter, just a glass shelf above the sink, but that is often true of hotel bathrooms in older hotels. The location was great, we used the valet parking which was perfect ($30.00 for two nights). My friend had a room overlooking the street and did find that it was a bit noisy. I had a room in the back and it was very quiet. Coffee maker and coffee in the room and the newspaper was delivered to outside the door every morning. I would definetly stay there again.
P.S. First time ever that I found a written thank you note from the cleaning attendant for the tip I had left her. That was a nice surprise.

We always stay at Elliot House Inn- right near the market area..
they have a jacuzzi outside- serve wine and cheese in the pm and deliver continental bkfst to your room in the AM..

Have been staying there for over 20 years..furnished with 4 poster beds-Waverly wallpaper-beautiful room..
BnB also loans you FREE bikes during the day to sightsee...VERY reasonable rates..

Magnolias, Ansons etc

Like andy, we also love the Elliott House Inn. It's so much fun to get up in the early morning and take the bikes out (old fashioned fat tire bikes!) and tool around the city. The courtyard is especially lovely with the lights wrapped around the towering palms, casting a soft glow. We love that Inn!

We've also stayed at the Ansonborough, which is very nice, though the location is not quite so central as the Elliott House Inn.

Actually, I don't think you can lose in Charleston at all! Or Savannah, our other favorite. We like the Old Harbour House Inn on Factor's Walk. It's another lovely place.

I've seen a pic of Scarlett loose in Paris....and it WAS a pretty sight! ;;)

i'll look into the elliot house,those bikes sound cool. and thanks for the notes on francis marion. i'm holding a room there. now onto food! what's the word on 82 queen? i'm into having low country food one night, and southern fancy on night...

gotravel...thanks! actually, i switched my plans all together, and got a great hotel rate at las brisas in ixtapa, mexico in december! i'll let everyone know how it is...i'll get to charleston soon though. ;-)
