Gotham Bar and Grill

Has anyone eaten here in NYC?

Yes it's excellent. The chef, Alfred Portale is considered a great innovator. There is an article on his influence on other NY chefs in a recent New York Magazine.

One of New York's best. Make reservations far in advance.

Excellent, excellent...and if you want a great meal but spending a little less, go for lunch!

Meeting friends there tomorrow night, driving in from NJ. Parking suggestions? Does my husband need a tie, or is a jacket ok?

Looking forward to it - have never been, but assume it is as good as Gramercy Tavern nearby!

The Gotham Bar and Grill is a great restaurant - the Tuna entree, the duck, the Indian spiced lamb, the Lobster or any of the evenings' specials will be wonderful. Chef Portale is known for his inventive presentations - everything comes out of the kitchen beautifully composed on the plate and impeccably delicious in your mouth.

For parking - there is a garage across the street (on 12th between University and 5th) - you could cruise the neighborhood looking for street parking, but it will be Saturday night - it could take 5 minutes or thirty. Might be worth the $20 parking fee in the garage.

A (dark) jacket and decent pants will be fine - business casual as they say. No tie is necessary. In fact, there is no strict dress code, it's just a suggestion to make you feel comfortable with the rest of the crowd.
As for noise - I myself have never had a problem with loudness - but we tend to eat early - 6:00 or 6:30 - the restaurant is always full, but the crowd tends to be a bit older, more mature. Later, it might get noisier - it's a big room.
Whatever - enjoy yourself - it is a wonderful place.

I agree, one of the best. Only take reservations 30 days ahead, and you must call early that day. here is the menu:

We were in NY for a day trip and had dinner there. We made reservations the same day. We were dresed in a casual manner but felt welcomed by the staff....no snootiness here! Next time we will get a bit more dressed to fit in with the crowd. The food was superb and we will be back! Enjoy!
