Goose Cove lodge Maine
Hi,
I just reserved a 4 night stay here in August for our family of 4, and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for which cabins? We booked Juniper but the innkeeper mentioned that the bathroom is very small, which I don't mind, I wanted a fireplace and view. Can anyone compare the Juniper to the Azalea or Clintonia cabins? Also, if we're driving from southwest CT, where would you suggest for a one night stopover up and back? I'm guessing we'd want to be in Southern Maine. Thanks so much! |
Has anyone been here????
|
I've never been there, but this site has been helpful to me in checking out different places to stay.
www.tripadvisor.com You might want to check if it's listed and if any previous guests have suggestions that they've listed. |
nina.
hi, i just booked one night there and after reading trip advisor i am a little- well, more than a little concerned. what was your experience when booking? the innkeeper was ok. but, because we were only booking for one night she seemed to be a little put out...now, with that said she still did allow me to book it even though they typically have a minimum stay ...thoughts? where in western ct? have you thought of portland. its a bigger city and they would have like holiday inn express' and places that would just be like a pit stop overnight for you...now of course portland is a cool little city too from what i understand |
hi nina, mapquest says about 5 hrs drive from waterbury to augusta using rtes 84-90-495-95. not sure how you get out to deer isle but assume you go to augusta, then 3 to belfast, then 1 to bucksport. if you are traveling north on a friday afternoon you need to add at least an hour (could be more) to get through the portmouth area with all the toll booths. from augusta another hour to bucksport and one more to deer isle. so this would be an 8? hour day. def doable, however if you want to stop i suggest belfast. after that the roads will be smaller and harder to follow especially if its after dark and kids/you will be getting tired. the drive to the inn will be very pretty so you don't want to miss it. the coast further south will be pretty booked by now. while the old port section of portland is fun and interesting it's a city and belfast is a very quaint little town and really typical of maine (not the touristy thing like old ochard, etc). on the way home you might consider taking rte 2 west from skowhegan via waterville. you could go all the way west through maine and into nh and pick up 91S at st. johnsberry,vt to hartford. 2 is nice through maine, beautiful through nh. 91 is a dream compared to going around boston and goes through very pretty country. you could stay over in hanover, nh. the hanover inn is oh so nice or there are several cute b&b's around.
have a great trip. |
Lia,
I'm in Weston. I'm thinking of Staying at the Black Point Inn on the way up if the'll do a one night stay. I read the tripadvisor reviews too, and I guess I have to put myself in the frame of mind that it is not a Four Seasons or a Rockresorts, it's a Maine Camp and small bathrooms or a dead fly come with the territory. We're paying almost $500 a night, but that's for 2 rooms, 4 people including breakfast and dinner. It sounds like a lot, but have you looked at Oakland house or Migis lodge? They're much pricier so I guess you have to put it in perspective. I spent a lot of time on the phone with the innkeeper trying to get info on the rooms and she did say that Juniper was small and had a small bathroom with only a shower, but I wanted the Fireplace and view, and didn't want to pay $100 more for square footage. I may upgrade to the Clintonia for $25 more a night if I can get some feedback as to whether it's worth it. They did seem a little confused regarding their rates on the website though. They initially quopted me a higher price than what is listed so be careful. |
really? hmmm...well all of that is interesting..the black point inn looks lovely. you know nina i am totally open to campy type resorts- actually places like four seasons and ritz carltons make me nervous...i guess i am nervous because i am making plans for my husband and myself and one of my college roommates and her husband. you know, you never want a place to be gross or dirty. i just dont want a campy place that is like out of the movie little darlings...you know what i mean i think. i will check the rates quoted for my room and my friend's room. we are paying $400 and they are paying $325. I think we have linnea and killen or something like that...i will be traveling before you in july...
|
I don't know what you mean, I've never seen the movie little darlings, but I've got 2 boys so if it's gross I've seen it and cleaned it up, a dead fly doesn't phase me.
You're paying $325 or $400 for 2 people, I've got 4, so $475 doesn't seem like such a bad deal to me. I think Linnea is very nice, that's the one the innkeeper was trying to get me to book and it's the one they show on their website. They always show the nicest rooms on the websites.... |
well,i am 34 and i have seen little darlings more than i care to say..its with jodie foster and tatum oneill from the 70's...ew. anyway, i have 2 year old so, i hear on cleaning up anything and Everything...ha ha...
yep its 325 for one room for 2 and 395 for the other room for 2. but, it is with meals so...anyway. i will let you know how it is if you are interested... |
Lia, I see you're staying at the Cottage Inn near Acadia, I think we're going to stay there one night too instead of making the roundtrip from Goose Cove...I can't wait to read your reviews!
|
yes nina.
harbor cottage inn in the southwester cottage. then, on to a new b and b called timbercliffe in camden, then on to goose cove then to manor inn for our final eve in castine...we have a very early flight on tues. am. leaving our two year old for this trip with grandma and grandpa...not the first time away from him but he is not going to like it this time...i am actually thinking about canning goose cove and staying in camden for two nights and paying the $50 fee for cancellation. thoughts? |
I think the trip out to Deer isle is worth it, plus the view and Goose Cove itself look amazing to me. That Linnea cottage looks so gorgeous I could stay there the whole week! Call Goose Cove and ask them to send the brochure, the photos in it are even nicer than what's on the web.
I've been to Camden about 4 times, it's a cute little town, but honestly, IMO, you can see it in a few hours. Personally I wouldn't spend 2 days there if it meant missing Goose Cove, but that's me. I'll check out Timbercliffe, I haven't heard of it. |
Also Lia,
When I booked I asked about their cancellation policy, and all she said was that it had to be done 60 days ahead, she never mentioned the steep $50 cancellation fee. I think that was a rather serious omission on her part. The only reason I know about it is because it's printed on the brochure which I imagine not many people even get. |
nina-
i agree completely...by the way, i got the cottage name wrong. its lupine. not linnea...eeks...hope its nice. i will get the brochure though. $50 bucks is steep and for two rooms we would cancel it would end up costing my party $100 bucks... i agree i want to head to deer isle. its so hard to gauge though having never been there. we are planning on hiking and biking in acadia while we stay there and we charted a sailboat for one evening for 5 hours and then we will kayak one day as well...my folks went to camdena and they said the same as you about it...but is more the region i was interesed in...with regards to timbercliffe. its not open yet. it used to be a different inn under a diff. name. the new owners purchased it last year and sent me pics. federalist style...very plain. very clean lines not frilly. nice folks though. now back to gcl...thats a huge omission on her part with regards to cancelling...and like what would you do if you had to cancel...argue it out with her? you know...its your word over hers... |
Lia,
I think you'll be glad that you went to Deer Isle, I think the peninsula's off the coast of Maine are the best and prettiest parts of Maine, I love the Pemaquid peninsula and the Harpswells further down. It's a PIA to drive down them then back up to route 1, but IMO it's worth it. |
