The Eagle Inn doesn't have a pool so if the kids want a pool nix that property in SB. Across the street from the Eagle Inn is the Franciscan Inn that is very family friendly and most of the rooms have been updated.
As far as Santa Cruz goes, plan on driving to the Boardwalk from wherever you stay. The area around the BW is sketchy. I'm not dissing Santa Cruz ( I live there) but crime has been up lately and I wouldn't want you to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you stay say at the Dream Inn that would a safe walk though. The Dream Inn is great, but it will be pricey on the 4th.

Thanks. Glimmer. That's also why I rec. Pelican Point Inn and driving. Walking around the bw is not my idea of a vacation either. At least with Pelican, it's cheap(er), has kichenette, several restaurants/delis/taquerias and beaches to walk to. This is where my family stays when they come visit.
