ON travelzoo.com the Sir Francis Drake is going for $99 a night....it is located near Union Square.

Hi poss, be cautious if you book a room at the Sir Francis Drake as I think they are still renovating their rooms (which got very old and worn looking).

Personally I prefer staying at Union Square. I am another one that loves the Villa Florence which has the restaurant Kuleto's attached to it. I usually enjoy my coffee and breakfast in Kuleto's and hardly need anything for lunch consequently. They have a hosted wine bar for an hour each evening in the lovely hotel lobby which starts at 5:00am. Public transportation is very convenient. It is just a few doors on Powell from Union Square.

Now, their bathrooms are large enough but not enourmous and if you want a quiet room do make that clear if you book a room with them as their front and side street rooms do get the street traffic which is typical of course in SF. Have a beautiful time in SF!!

SAN FRANCISCO HOTEL: If you are a military veteran or on active duty the best deal in town is the MARINE MEMORIAL HOTEL.

Rooms are great. The rates are under $200 per night and close to eveything.

The room rate includes free breakfast and free happy hour in the 14th floor lounge.

It costs $100 per year to be a member and you can then take guests. One of the best deals going in SF. Check out their website.

I would say the best deal is definitely what you get through priceline.com. and you don't have to pay $100 a year for that, which many won't really recover if they only travel a couple times a year.

Here is another vote for the Hyatt - go to www.hyatt.com and when you go to reservations on the rate choose "senior citizen rate'. Stayed at this hotel this last 4th July and it was quiet, great location and price.

We stayed at the Hotel Rex, a lovely, smallish hotel that has a wonderful location and an unbelievably helpful and friendly staff. It is a total departure from chain-type places. It reminded us of being in Europe.

We rode BART from the SFO airport and the stop is directly across from the hotel.

Well, unless you don't like large hotels, so far as I've seen on this thread no hotel can beat the price of Parc 55, at least for my dates (12/15 to 12/19). I care about price as I'm paying for two rooms and I'm not rich, but I like to travel. I'm fussy about beds and linens and their's meet my standards, although I can't sleep under a duvet--too warm!

The next time you stay at the Parc 55 see if you can talk them into a corner room on a high floor. These have wraparound floor to ceiling windows and are spacious.

No, you are not crazy at all. There is more of a challenge on holiday weekends and if a mjor conference is in town, but there are many decent hotels for under $300. I won't repeat the suggestions already provided by other readers (including bidding for a 4-star on Priceline; check other review sources, e.g. tripadvisor.com to understand any quirks about the place.)

Add to those recommendations: Parc 55, which feels like a business class hotel, has a large bathroom, pretty well-kept property right at a BART transit point. Don't spring for the club lounge complimentary breakfast. The view is nice, but the food is nthing special, and I think the management of that lounge is wanting. We would have rather gone to other places in the area, or even the public hotel cafe.

The White Swan B & B on Bush Street (and there are others;) the usual suspects of business-class hotels: Marriott on Market and 4th (big business-class hotel, ; the Argent; the W hotel; as well as the usual chains. Again, it is useful to check tripadvisor to learn about any slips in quality, current renovations, etc.

There are have been other discussions about the location, e.g. closer to Union Square (my preferred location,) nearer the Ferry docks at Market Street, or Fisherman's Wharf (my least favorite, mostly due to a solidly tourist atmosphere.) Also: there can be some good deals on top of Nob Hill (e.g. MArk Hopkins) and the area is pretty quiet, but know that you will have VERY steep hills to climb, i.e. some people can deal with it, others not.
