Good San Diego breakfast joint?

Can anyone suggest a good breakfast place in San Diego, maybe in Old Town area. We are looking for someplace that might be featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. You know the kind. We we be staying near the San Diego airport and wlll be making our way to Escondido in the afternoon, so something along the way. Thanks for any suggestions.

A very popular place to go is Bread & Cie in Hillcrest. Around third and University.

Or for a heartier breakfast with pancakes, omlettes and an overall larger menu try Crest Cafe also in Hillcrest on Robinson and 5th.

Hillcrest is just up town from the downtown area -- if you drive up 5th Ave (which begins in the downtown area) and go north you are in Hillcrest (it's only a few minute drive), then you can catch the freeway directly to Escondido.

The freeway entrance is on 6th and University right around the corner from both spots I mentioned above.

I always liked this place for breakfast when I lived in San Diego (many years ago). Huge cinnamon rolls. It has been featured on Diners, etc. Check out their website:

I like the Green Flash in the Mission/Pacific Beach area - outside dining right on the beach- I have not been there in a few years but always thought the food and the views were great!

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm getting hungry already.

If you can handle teh kink, thsis Goggle link list several with a knife & fork map.

One greasy spoon diner not mentioned is Perry's..more like a Truck stop.. no view but very popular.

The other is Hash House A GOGO..on Hillcrest. HUGE portions...ourside deck..

The Broken Yolk in Pacific Beach is something of an institution and it's easy to get there from the 5 freeway and is on your way.

It's definitely along the lines of D,DI&D- they even sell shirts and mugs.

Yes, The Green Flash in Pacific Beach is great - it's about the view - the restaurant is literally right on the beach and reasonably priced.

I think The Broken Yoke (also in Pac Beach) may have had new management because their food isn't as good as it used to be.

We like Cafe 222 - a quirky place on Island Ave

Hmmm. MomDDTravel, I can't believe I haven't heard about this place!! Looks great. I will have to try it out myself.

We found it when staying at the Marriott gaslamp and did not want to pay for expensive hotel breakfast - and love it! Every time we stay downtown we make a point of going - be prepared for a wait- a d go when the weather is pleasant as waiting is outside and a few of the tables are as well :)

I plan to go today (although it is raining outside).
I can probably get their at an off time which might help a little. Thanks for the suggestion.

:)

Cafe 222 looks pretty cool. Will have to check it out next time I'm in San Diego. Last time I was there I had breakfast at Maryjane's, which was good but probably not what the OP is looking for.

Nanabee, I've tried to take you here before. MelissaHI told me about Cafe222 years ago, when it first opened, and I've gone several times. I love their pumpkin waffles!

It is a block or so behind Horton Plaza, toward the bay.Be careful, the meter maids are fierce in that area.

MomDDTravel Feb 16th, 2011 01:35 PM

lcuy - I am not surprised Melissa told you about it! She did tell me about the best breakfast place I have ever been to in Oahu - Boots & Kimos - cannot wait to go back in June. :)

Nanabee - let us know how it goes!

nanabee Feb 16th, 2011 05:08 PM

well it's a date next time you are in town lcuy!

momdd - i had planned to go today but plans changed and i ended up going out with a couple of friends to a great Vietnamese food restaurant called
Pho Van Restaurant, 4233 El Cajon Blvd, (619) 281-9420.
It just happened to be much closer and we had to get back to work quicker than we had planned.

I still plan to go to Cafe 222 within the next couple of days.

Well, we just got back from breakfast at Cafe 222. We called ahead for reservations and they don't take them over the phone. The hostess said the slow time is between 7:00 am and 8:30 am (this was a Sunday morning). So we got there a little after 8:00 and were seated without any delay. But just as she said at 8:30 the line started down the street.

It is a cute place - bright & sunny, cheery, warm, clean, stylish, friendly wait persons, with indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating has very efficient overhead heaters and they are extremely warm! We ate indoors however.

The food portions are hugh and the prices are very reasonable. The only thing I didn't like was because it is so small (maybe seating for 35 people indoors and outdoors) and because there is always a long line I felt rushed to eat and leave quickly. We prefer Sunday morning cafe's were you can linger and read the paper. Otherwise it is a super place. I plan to go back for lunch which looks equally good. :)

We did try Cafe 222 on our first morning and really liked the place. Portions were big and prices not too bad. We were there last Saturday and had to wait about 20 minutes at 10:30 am. We are considering going back on the day we leave San Diego if we don't get too delayed with traffic. Thanks for the recommendation.
