Logan Airport to downtown Boston--free Silver Line transport

For anyone planning on flying into Boston this summer, starting tomorrow, June 6, people arriving at Logan Airport can take the Silver Line to South Station at no cost. You can also get a free transfer to continue on at South Station.

This is a 90-day pilot program to help speed transportation from the airport into downtown and to try to increase the number of people taking the Silver Line bus. It is being underwritten by Massport.

Here's a link to the story in the Boston Globe:

I think that's a good idea. As the article says, those of us veteran riders often get impatient when tourists board the Silver Line bus and not have the correct fare or ticket etc. This will speed up the boarding process at Logan, hopefully.

Good news. The Silver Line being free from Boston's Logan Airport to South Station is continuing until January 6, 2013. Very convenient for those who want to transfer to the commuter rail or to the Red Line at South Station.

meanwhile commuters pick up the tab with huge increases in fare's and parking fees to pick up the balance. While wages and cost of living increases are dead in the water, the MBTA increases rates %25 every other year.

5 years ago, I couldn't get into our Commuter Rail parking lot after 8:30 AM. Since then parking and fares have increase soooo much that the parking lot is half empty.

Massport is paying for the Silver Line to lessen airport congestion.

Subway and bus fares hadn't gone up in years before the recent increase and are still much less than other metropolitan systems. And ridership has never been higher.

I was speaking of commuters. Not too long ago the rate was about $6 a day to park and take the commuter rail into town. Now it is $17.75 a day. So if you have a friend, it is cheaper to take the HOV lane in and park then take what was supposed to be affordable rail service. Parking increased from $1 to $2 to a jump to $4 a day. Fares went from $2.25 each way to $6.75 each way in just a few short years. Parking rates for the T have also had a significant increase in the suburbs to match the commuter rail parking lots.

You may celebrate this free Silverline, but nothing in life is free, and we are paying for it one way or another.
