Good restaurants in the Financial District or Greenwich Village
Hello, We are heading to NYC from Boston for our regular monthly “opera and more” trip. We had four trips so far done since December and now are coming to wrap our the opera season. We usually stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Central Park and love it, but this time we would like to explore something new (not really new, but the areas we visit rarely). So we are staying at the Residence Inn World Trade Center and will head to the Greenwich Village and the Little Italy for walks and food. What nice mid-range restaurants would you recommend in the Financial District or the Villages or Little Italy? We are not picky, but we do appreciate healthy food - no deep fried or fatty meals for us, no steaks, hamburgers, etc. Thank you you so much in advance! |

You may have been to Eataly too. I don't love it but it's very interesting. Sorry I can't help you much with the Financial district. It's been years since I've stayed down in that area. If you are a Hamilton fan, there's a Hamilton tour that I enjoyed very much (a few years ago). Here is a list I have posted in a long time. Unless otherwise stated it is inexpensive to moderately expensive. Mostly East Village
Bagels-there are about six places that make bagels on First Ave between 12th Street and 20th Street. Our favorite remains Ess-A-Bagel. Tompkins Square is good but chances are 50-50 they will get your order wrong. BBQ-Mighty QuinnBrunches-City Bakery (18th off 5th), Clinton Street Bakery, weekend is a zoo), Esperanto Burgers- Brindle Room (on many top 10 nationwide lists), Black Iron (also have wonderful onion rings), Paul’s (local divey spot), Corner Bistro (on everyone’s list, zoo on weekends)Chinese Bao-The Baohaus-The guy with the TV show and book. Drunken Dumpling. They make soup dumplings among a few other things on their limited menu including an oversized soup dumpling of which they only make 25 a day. Chinese Dim Sum-Jing Fung, Golden Unicorn, Nom Wah on Doyers. Chinese-Manhattan Chinatown-Big Wong, Joe’s Ginger, NY Noodletown Chinese Szechuan-Hot Kitchen on 2nd Ave and Xian Famous on St Marks which is a local chain. Dessert-Veniero's, ChikaliciousExpensive but great prix fixe lunches-Gotham, Tocqueville (no longer have a year round prix fixe Eastern European- Veselka,(The quality has varied over the years, but it is now a good period.) French Bistro-Lucien (more expensive), the good cheaper ones have disappeared, Le Midi is reasonably priced Greek-Pylos (little more expensive), Taverna Kyuclaides for fish Hip American-Brindle Room Hip Filipino both owned by the same people Jeepney and Maharlikan (more expensive) Hot soup- Brodo-Sidewalk opening on First Ave as part of Hearth. Ice Cream-Davey’s (Our current favorite), Cones on Bleecker, Il Laboratorio de Gelato, Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, Cones and Sundaes (East 10th), Grom (Italian chain), Van Leewen Indian-Haveli, Saravanaa Bhavan, Sahib (on Lex and about 26 St.) Italian, Inexpensive- La Marca (3rd Ave. and 22 Street, only opened noon-10 PM, Mon-Fri) Great Value Italian, Medium priced-Cacio e Pepe, Gnocco, Supper (cash only), Luzzos (Wood burning pizza oven), Le Zie (7th Ave and about 19th) Jewish Deli-2nd Ave Deli, the side dishes are superior to Katz’s. Katz’s is a zoo at all times now due to its celebrity. Lebanese-Au Za'atar which very reasonably priced French-MideasternPizza whole pies-Motorino, Lombardi's, Gruppo, Pizza slices-Joe's on Bleecker and East 14th Ramen-Ippudo’s is always a zoo, Rai, Rai Ken Serbian-Kafana on Ave C. Seafood-Mary’s-Fish Camp (cramped, no reservations, moderate), Luke’s Lobster (just lobster rolls, limited seating various locations) Aquagrill (very expensive) Spanish tapas-Tia Pol, Café Mono (more expensive)Turkish-Turkish Kitchen (Very good values are the daily prix fixe lunch and Sunday buffet) Venezulean- Patacon Pisao-, unbelievable chacapas Vietnamese-Madame Vo, Sao Mai. |
OMG, we only have two days and one morning... This why we keep coming to NYC every month - so much to see! We are great fans of Alexander Hamilton, but not of the musical. The tour is something we might consider for a warmer day. We love the Lox Cafe at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. We have been there in December and loved their wonderful blintzes with red caviar and lox sandwiches. And their coffee cake was really out of this world. We are going back there for lunch on Sunday, March 31st, before driving back home. So we are all set with the places to eat in the Financial District. https://www.loxnyc.com/ Grilled octopus sounds awesome: I enjoyed it in Brazil and Portugal and even my conservative husband tried a little piece. On Friday, we will most likely have an early dinner somewhere and head to the Met for “Tosca”. Cannot wait! NYC is like a magnet: the more I go there, the more I want to be back. I know it is crazy, we have just been in NYC on March 1st - 3rd and yet I somehow managed to convince my husband to return on March 29th... I owe him a good meal!😊 Thank you so much, starrs! |
Great list, Iamdonehere! Thank you! We do not eat burgers and stay away from Chinese, but French, Italian and Lebanese sound very tempting. And Ess-A-Bagel is a must - I have already spotted it: bagels is something I allow myself only in NYC. I agree that Katz deli is a zoo, so we are not going there and will be very willing to try other Jewish deli places. We both love Rueben sandwiches and I can live on bagels with cream cheese and lox. It is better for me to go on a diet now and get ready😊 |
A couple of quick throw in’s. Pastrami sandwiches at Harry and Ida’s. Chicken pot pie with mashed potatoes and gravy at the Dead Rabbit with a pint. |

Great lists so far. One add, one quibble:
-John's does excellent pizza. In the Village. -Katz's may be a zoo (though the times I've gone in past haven't been that way -- maybe just got lucky?), and 2nd Avenue Deli may be a more overall balanced deli experience, but the things Katz's does well make it worth the visit. In particular, would strongly recommend the pastrami on rye with deli mustard, which is the best sandwich I've ever eaten. Period, end of sentence. I say go to both -- they're worth it. |
Just wanted to point out that though I am a devoted 2nd Ave Deli fan, they are kosher and so do not offer a Reuben sandwich.

A friend who went to Katz's so often, he was included in the written history of the deli and gets a table whenever he enters, rarely goes there. The cater to tourists and forgot about the people who got them through the first 120 years.
The only problem with Harry and Ida's is there are very places to sit. If the weather is nice, take the sandwich and eat in Tompkins Square Park. |
You are a bit of a way from the East Village unless you are a good walker.
In Nolita, here are two restaurants that I visit fairly often, both take reservations but the earlier you are willing to eat, the more chance you have of getting a table. PASQUALE JONES. They are famous for their clam pizza but they do marvelous vegetable dishes. Their leeks and their vignarola (the latter spring only) are two of the best veg dishes I ate last year. They cook in a wood-bruning oven and the small menu has fish, meat and pastas, in addition to the pizza and veg. Currently one of my favorites. UNCLE BOONS. Modern Thai. Baby octopus are a standout but they do a lot of dishes very well. They set aside many tables for walk-ins sos if you want one of those, get there at opening time. If you do go to the East Village, and if you'd like to try one of our modern Asian places, I like both HUNAN SLURP and MADAME VO. Hunan Slurp, as you can tell, is Chinese but very light and not greasy. If you love octopus, which every other NYC restaurant seems to feature as an appetizer these days, I have two recommendations for you:
ALDEA, Portuguese near Union Square, set menu plus a la carte ALDEA GATO, Bobby Flay's Spanish-focused place on Lafayette Street. Attachment 2243 CASA MONO also does outstanding octopus when it is on their menu, and TXIKITO does a wonderful Galcian-style octopus, a carpaccio of octopus: Dinner ? Txikito AND, just for the record, BABBO has stupendous octopus with limoncello viniagrette. (They also use a citrus jam on their branzino which elevates that fish to the heavens, in my opinion) Sorry..getting way off topic here... Taverna Kyclades is cheap, for NYC, but I don't think the quality of the food is great, and I've had overcooked fish there (admittedly, the few times I've been have mostly been to their original location in Astoria) For good fish, take a look at GLORIA in the theatre district. |

Thank you so much, ekscrunchy and all! I think I have enough recommendations for a month in NYC 😊. This octopus with limoncello viniagrette sounds heavenly.... And we like fish, so all we need is more time... Well, I cannot live without New York long enough, so there is always another trip in the making. |
Thrilled for the tip on Taverna Kyuclaides and octopus! You have tons of recs but I do still love Il Cantinori in the East Village.

Il Cantinori is very tempting, denisea! My two favorite Italian dishes are on the menu: grigliata di funghi e verdure miste and bucatini al cacio e pepe. Thank you for a great tip! We have decided to stay at our usual hotel, Courtyard by Marriott Central Park, which is very close to the Met Opera, but on Saturday we will be walking in Greenwich Village, East and West Village and Soho all day long, so I am so looking forward for a good lunch and dinner there. On Friday, we will go again to our favorite AbaTurkish Restaurant on the 57th. |
