nanabee, go to the other Chicago thread on here. This question comes up so much that you will get better answers that way. There are several up right now. Or do a search like this:
Chicago pizza
Chicago sushi
Chicago steak
on the search feature- if all else fails.
Ditka's on Chestnut. Not Californian.

Another place we happened upon that we enjoyed was Bice at 158 East Ontario St.
It's off the radar, but it's a small, bustling, and convivial place where we entertained friends and we all had a most pleasant time. I found this doing a Google search:
White-tablecloth dining in the Gold Coast? That’s no surprise. A smaller, simpler alternative to tourist traps like Carmine’s or Maggiano’s? Time to sit up and take notice.
A sleek Italian bistro, Bice retains the small, intimate feel of a classy local restaurant, even though it's located steps from the bustling Magnificent Mile. In fact, if you’re not a local in the know, chances are you stumbled upon Bice or had a friend recommend it. With excellent sidewalk seating, outdoor dining is the way to go in the warmer months. If the weather won’t cooperate, the romantic interior is colorful without being clown-like; it's as bright and sophisticated as the menu. The cozy front tables share space with a small bar and overlook the sidewalk through French doors. The more expansive back room accommodates bigger weekend crowds.
The original restaurant is in Milan, and the food tastes as if it were imported from that kitchen. The pasta doesn’t fall off your plate, but you're satiated completely with the sophisticated sauces and preparation. The salads aren’t heaping piles of dressing-drenched roughage, but they're pleasing all the same. It’s pricey but tasty, and the service is almost always polished and knowledgeable. Bice Grill is an adjacent spot that serves up more casual, lunch-like fare.
