good plays
 

I will be in New York in april and would like some advice about good plays .

You need to provide a little more info. When you say plays do you mean dramas versus musicals? Something light versus serious musical (42nd St versus Rent?)? Or anything on or off Broadway? How many people and what ages? What have you seen before and liked?

On Friday I saw a preview of Cookin', an off-broadway show playing in the Village on Minetta Lane. Excellent! It opens in early March. Highly recommended!

Christopher Plummer will be starring in King Lear at Lincoln Center while you are here. Also, there's a revival of Sly Fox, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Eric Stoltz and host of other name performers.

I am considering tickets to 42nd street for myself, sister-in-law and our daughters (21 & 14). It's our first trip to NYC. 21 yr. old voted for Chicago, but it doesn't sound like a good choice as far as elaborate scenery or costumes. How about Thoroughly Modern Millie? What would you suggest as an all-out glitzy, but good, Broadway production for us? Thanks.

If you want glitz, then it's 42nd Street, but in my opinion, Chicago is a far better show.

Howard: Is Chicago appropriate for a 14 year old? Any others that you think would be better than 42nd?

Did you see the movie? It would be a good guideline for you. If it was my child, I would have no objection. But, that's MY opinion.
Other shows for a 14-year-older? Hairspray would be on top of my list.
But don't get me wrong. 42nd Street would be a good choice. I just think that Chicago and Hairspray are better shows.

I think we'll eliminate Chicago, but which of these would be best for our group(moms and 21 and 14 yr old daughters, first NYC play):

Of the shows you listed, I think your daughter might enjoy "Millie". It is is an all out fun musical with great dance numbers and comedy. My daughter and I both loved it.

I am not sure what people are looking for on this thread. Most of what has been discussed are musicals. If you want plays, two really excellent performances are The Stendahl Syndrome with Isabella Rossalini and Richard Thomas or Small Tragedy at Playwrights Horizon. Some of the best acting I have seen in months, with the exception of Henry IV.

Ironically, I'd recommend either 42nd Street or Thoroughly Modern Millie for the daughters' first show, even though I think that Gypsy and Movin' Out are better shows! I just think that the daughters would enjoy 42nd Street or Millie more.

If you want to take a chance- be flexable and see what is available at the TKTS booth, or available via discounts in advance. Any of your selections would offer a great broadway experience!!!

Thank you for your answers.I really like plays better than musicals.Last time I was in New York I enjoyed very much Proof,Metamorphosis and Dinning with friends.We saw Contact and The Producers and these were fantastic. I am planning to see Movin`out and now will consider your recomendations.
