Good Place to Meet for 4-5 Days in December Between DC and Atlanta

We have family coming from India to DC area in December/January. We are in Atlanta. We are thinking about where we could meet up 1/2 way and minimize the driving for everyone. Looks like it would be mountain areas. Asheville to close to us... We're not as familiar with the area and would like ideas to start researching.

We'd take nature and a nice rental house for walks, hanging out but also like having a nice town near by too. If beach were possible I'd love that but that doesn't make sense drive time wise.

Just starting to think of ideas. Thanks.

Asheville would be wonderful, but if it is a beach you want, consider IOP near Charleston. Great rates on big house rentals, walking the beach is certainly an option.

What about Smith Mountain Lake area? I haven't been there in the winter, but you could probably find a deal on a waterfront vacation home.

Waynesville is a cute town outside Ashville with lots of rental homes available.

Beach? Could be Charleston as Cmfong suggests or a bit further up around Litchfield/Pawley's.
Waynesville may have lots of rentals but it is a bit "out there" for things to do. Asheville is nice. Or even the Triangle area--Durham/ChapelHill. Lots to do.

Thanks everyone, now I am thinking they will fly here to ATL and we'll be looking for some Christmas Cheer in a short trip from ATL.
