I had the same quetion earlier in the week and a co-worker suggested a drive down the California coastline from San Fran to Santa Barbara. We are thinking of including a side trip to Yosemite.

Give us a break! There are 50 different states and thousands of cities and towns that meet your perameters. How about giving us some clues about you and any companions that might be travelling with you. What are your likes and dislikes? Do you wat something up north where it's cold or down south where it might be warm? Big city or small town? Mountains or the shore?
It's your trip, don't expect us to do all the thinking for you. |
In the past for an October trip we have visited San Francisco, Chicago, the Adirondacks and last year a rip down the Blueridge Parkway. So far we have thought about going back to San francisco or Chicago. or maybe a trip to Charleston and Savannah. New England sounds appealing, though I am not sure where.

What type of activities interest you?

Since we reside in CLT, hnear the Mts. we usually head for the Carolina beaches & steer clear of the leaf-peepers. You won't find abetter time on the coast weather-wise & no people wise. I suggest Charleston & stay on one of the islands (Seabrook). Or Amelia Island & daytrip to St. Aug &/or Savannah.

CA coast, San Francisco to Santa Barbara. If you like coatal regions.

Mid-October would be fine for New England but not late October if looking for color unless you limit yourself to southern New England. For late October, Halloween in New England could be fun. Check out Keene NH's pumpkin festival. Weather can be iffy for late October since I remember many grey, drizzly Halloweens. If you choose New England, it's not too early to get reservations. Foliage time is very popular.

Come & enjoy the wine in Napa Valley!

Isn't that the company where the owners were indicted for fraud?

chokrebali's post looks like an ad, and that is his first post. Just so you know.
don, I love New Mexico, because we like hot springs and fall and spring are the best times to hike and visit the hot springs for a relaxing soak. There's good hiking and hot springs in Jemez Springs (sort of north west of ABQ) and Gila Hot Springs (where there's also cliff dwellings). |
October is nice in many places...I'll throw in a vote for the Texas Hill Country.

It all depends on what you're looking for in a fall trip- but here are some favorites...
NYC- fall in central park is beautiful. Asheville, NC- gorgeous foliage, great mountain views, quaint town feel. Charleston, SC- gorgeous just about year round; great restaurants and shopping. California wine country- you can read many posts here about why Sonoma is better than Napa and vice versa. New Orleans- wanna talk about food and fun and??? |
