Good, inexpensive travel bottles?
 

Any ideas, tips etc. on what makes good travel bottles (for shampoo etc)? Something about the same size as 16 oz. water bottles, only thicker, more durable plastic, with screw-on tops.. We know they sell them in stores, but we're just wondering if there are cheaper alternatives?

I just buy them at the supermarket or Longs, Walmart, Target, whereever.

Do not understand what you mean by cheaper alternatives. The ones I buy are very inexpensive.

It seems we're always throwing plastic bottles away into the recycling bin, and I was just wondering if anyone came across any products that come in containers which make good travel bottles. Cost isn't really the issue, it's more a recycling question.

I don't toss smaller soda bottles, put a sticky label over it with a word "shampoo" or whatever I put in, take with me on a trip and if I need more space it can be disposed.

The cheapest I can add to LoveItaly's list can be found at Walgreens, RiteAid. Or buy one small shampoo bottle once, and use it again and again.

If price is not an issue Naglene bottle come in all sizes and are virtually indestructible thus eliminating the need to toss or recycle. Your only problem would be to deciced on what colors you'd like!

IMHO I have never been able to clean plastic bottles where I felt they were acceptable to put shampoo etc. into.

When I travel I always take the smallest container of my shampoo or whatever with me and than buy more on my trip when I need it. I like to have my carryon as light as possible.

When I travel home I leave whatever shampoo etc. I have in the wastepaper basket before I pack for the trip home. Again, I like to travel as light as possible.

I am not as obviously as good as recycling as our Faina, which makes me feel guilty. But at home I am. So I hope it all evens out.

I have reused bath gel bottles from Lush for a couple of years now.
A few weeks ago I found some great shampoo in 8oz size. I bought a few bottles and intend on recycling later.
I can't imagine that I would ever need 16oz of any product on a trip.
I am always on the lookout for good containers, especially those with labels I can get off.
I have had great luck finding all sorts of containers.

Oh, that should be Nalgene. Where's that spell check I requested, Fodors?!?!

The Nalgene bottles can also be purchased at REI stores (or online).

I buy the travel size of my products and then just keep refilling them for future travel. The nice thing with that is I know exactly what is in the bottle since the label is still on it.

Those Nalgenes though, indestructible!!!
