I assume Old Town Alexandria?
Holiday Inn Select is about as central you can be in Old Town, but the area is not that big. We stayed at Embassy Suites near the King St Metro - and walked to the river easily enough, and there's buses, some free, if that's too far.
obxgirl: did the CheeseShoppe ever move to the "A Good Place to Eat" site on D of G Street?

rb,
Life in restored colonialville moves very slowly. The Cheese Shop hasn't completed their move yet. We all are anticipating the new place with the Son of Cheese Shop bistro. (is this a small town or what?)
Meanwhile have you tried the Cities Grille during any of your visits? It's a popular spot with the locals.
Always appreciate your well balanced travel commentary.

Muffin,
Then by all means investigate the Morrison House for your birthday. It's a lovely and charming stay. The Elysium restaurant is excellent. There are no spa facilities that I know of but I'm sure the concierge would make arrangements for you elsewhere in Alexandria.
Happy Birthday!

Here's another vote for morrisonhouse.com. We spent several anniversary weekends there. You won't regret it. It's first class. They'll even shine your shoes for you if you leave them out. It's only a block off King Street, which is a great street for restaurants & shopping.
