Good camping between NYC and DC

Hi there, I live in NYC and my boyfriend lives in DC. We were hoping to go hiking/camping for a long weekend somewhere between our two cities. He has a car, so getting there wouldn't be an issue. We would like someplace not too far from either city, where we can hike and camp on our own (not in campgrounds). Obviously we are also hoping for a place that isn't overly popular, so it's not too crowded. Anyone know of a good area?

With a smile on my face, I can't help but ask if you are new to the NYC/DC metropolis? The only spot that comes to mind would be the Appalachian Trail just west of Gettysburg,PA.There are nearby accessible expressways from both cities. I would recommend that you meet on Rte. 30 at the Caledonia (PA) State Park and head south towards Harpers Ferry, WV-beautiful!.

The Caledonia suggestion is an excellent one. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club is headquartered in DC: Go here on the web: http://www.patc.net/index.htm .
