Good Book on Alaska
Can anyone recommend a good book about travel in Alaska? My parents are going this summer and I would like to give them a book for Christmas. All I know is they are flying into Anchorage and I guess doing the usual Alaska tourist sites. Thanks

Not exactly a travel book, but one that gives the flavor of Alaska: Coming into the Country, by John McPhee.

Hmmmm...

The name of this site is FODORS.com, and you can't find a book recommended about Alaska?

Try "Frommer's Alaska" book then.

(Hint: Fodors publishes TRAVEL BOOKS!)

I highly recommend the MilePost. It has everything listed mile by mile. My husband and I were in Alaska this past fall and the only place that there were no signs was where there was road construction and some of those had been moved back further from the side of the road.

I'll second the vote for the Milepost. I bought or read seven guide books for my trip to Alaska, and the Milepost was more useful than the others combined. It is both sufficient and necessary for people driving to and around Alaska.

There are jillions of cool books on Alaska--I just finished Norman Vaughan's autobiography "My Life of Adventure". There's lots of Alaska stuff in there including his numerous runs on the Iditarod Trail up to Nome from Anchorage. But I like "The Great Alaskan TourSaver". It's the ultimate Alaska travel coupon book. More than $15,000 in travel coupons--all free or 2-for-1. www.toursaver.com
There are several books from Epicenter Press about the wilderness in Alaska: "Bush Rat Governor" about Jay Hammond, "Flying Cold" about Bush pilots, "Bear Tales" about...dunh...bear stories and so forth. If you can't find them at your local bookstore, check www.cookinletbooks.com
