Good BBQ north of Tennessee?

Dh and love good BBQ - pulled pork, brisket, and ribs - YUMMY! We live in Ohio and have found a good place locally for brisket and that's it. Tried a new place recommend to us in Columbus this weekend and the pulled pork was just sad. For those of you familiar w/the chain Sonny's - it is HEAVEN compared to what we have around here (though I realize it doesn't compare w/what you find further south at non-chains). Most folks in the midwest think good pulled pork is just dandy when you get it in a tub swimming in sauce and gristle at the grocery store.

So I ask you, in your travels, have you ever eaten really good bbq north of Tennessee? If so, WHERE???

Excellent BBQ Ribs @ Montgomery Inn, in Montgomery OH, a suburb of Cincinnati..IN Cincy is the Boat House..both owned by the Gregory family. It's the ONLY place I would wait 2 hours for ribs. (We lived in Middletown OH, for 30 and went to both, often.) Oh, how I miss those Montgomery Inn ribs now that we are in Florida.

Kansas City is north (and west) of Tennessee and has some great BBQ places. I live in the St. Louis area and we also have a few decent BBQ places as well.

Sorry, I forgot to name the restaurants! In Kansas City, I like Gates BBQ and in St. Louis I prefer Super Smokers.

mamajo - Would you believe I used to work at Montgomery Inn (I was a hostess during the summer during college)?!? It is actually just a couple of miles from where I live now. Their ribs are good, but I've had that sweet bbq sauce of theirs so many times I can't eat it too often (I used to pour it all over my baked potatoes).

Is there a particular place you'd recommend in Owensboro?

To Snowrooster: We've had Montgomery Ribs shipped to us, but they do not taste quite the same as going to MI or the Boathouse.

Moonlight Barbecue has buffet lines as well as menus. My best friend's husband loves their mutton bbq, but we like the pulled pork best. They serve several vegetables on the buffet and have a dessert bar as well. Be prepared to wait.

Another good friend lives in Owensboro and prefers another restaurant, but I'm afraid I can't remember the name. There are lots of places--just ask at your hotel.
