Good article on state of rail travel in the U.S.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting the address.

Thanks for hte lnk.

How can they hold Amtrak to that self-sufficiency requirement while bailing out airlines? Where's the logic in that?
|
Joanne, I guess congress doesn't ride on Amtrak...
|
I think it comes down to the fact that the auto and airline industries can lobby the government for subsidies and Amtrak can't. Amtrak should hire an oil industry lobbyist!

If you care about the future of train travel in the US, it's now time to make your preferences known to the Senators and Reps from your state.

Senator Biden from Delaware is currently running a poll on his site about this. You can vote at: http://biden.senate.gov/

You can also go to these sites to express your opinion:
US Senate: http://www.senate.gov
US House: http://www.house.gov

Please speak up today -- silence is assent.
Just came back from voting on Sen Biden's site -- over 1100 votes cast and a 96% Yes vote for US rail so far.

Train travelers -- if you remember your railroad experiences fondly, please go vote so that others share in the same joy of riding the trains -- both long and short distance.

Thanks in advance.

ttt...

In essence, Amtrak has been told by the council who oversees them that they must submit their liquidation plan within 90 days.

Liquidate Amtrak? No more rail travel in the US?

Congress is just starting to get on aboard about this -- but I'll bet they'd like to hear from you.

Speak up!
What's particularly disturbing is that the U.S. House is planning to dissolve Amtrak at the same time that it wants to transfer $800 million in cash to General Motors through the Economic Stimulus Bill...

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/25/opinion/25KRUG.html
