Good area vs bad area in New Orleans

Could anyone help me out? My wife and I are planning a 3 or 4 day weekend to see New Orleans. Neither have been there and we are really interested in staying in a nice area. I know some city neighborhoods could turn bad real quick. Is there a specific area which we should avoid staying in? Any insider information would be a great help.

Steven, you should probably stick to the French Quarter area on your first trip. Save the other places for future visits.

Steven, there are some seedy areas in and around the French Quarter, though we've always stayed in the Quarter when in NO because it's so much fun to be there. Another possibility (one I'd like to try next time) is to stay in a B&B in the nearby lovely Garden District, and ride the cable car to the Quarter. Just for something different.

Bad Area- all of New Orleans
Good Area- Outside of Louisiana

Stay away from this hellhole. PS Bourbon Street gets real dark at night.

The French Quarter is probably one of the most heavily policed - and therefore safest - areas in the country. If you stay in the heart of the French Quarter, you'll be just fine...

This "hellhole" (this board seems to attract people like "xxx" doesn't it?) is one of the most historic and most heavily-visited cities in America. In fact, I read the other day that New Orleans and San Francisco regularly top the list of cities where first-time visitors most want to return in the future. You'll have a good time, Steven, wherever you stay.

As long as you stay on streets with several people on it you will be okay. Never go down a street that has no one it or is dark.
