The Road to Lake Tahoe, A Driving Question
From Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe, is it faster to go onto the 267 at Truckee and drive around the Lake, or continue onto Reno then take the 395? Have never driven this route and am hoping to hear from travelers familiar with the roads there. Thanks in advance for your help.

Fastest would be to take highway 50 out of Sacramento. The road signs will tell you the way. Next fastest would be to turn in at Truckee. This is also the more scenic route to see the lake. Probably about 45 minutes to 1 hour longer to South Lake Tahoe than the highway 50 route. Between Reno and South Lake Tahoe 395 out of Carson is the fastest route.

If you are asking what is the fastest route from Sac to Southshore, Gerry is correct. Hwy 50 is much faster.
But if you just want to take Hwy 80 for some reason and are asking if Truckee or Reno is faster -- then Hwy 80 to 267 at Truckee and then around the Nevada (east) shore would be faster than either Hwy 80 to 89 at Truckee and around the West shore, or 80 to Reno / hwy 395 to Carson City / hwy 50 to southshore.

SLAM DUNK!! Highway 50. Once you get past Placerville (Hang Town), the trip gets very scenic.
A good part of the trip is 2 lane with occasional passing lanes, so don't be impatient. Much of it follows the American River. The highlight of Hgwy. 50, however, is coming over the summit with the view of the entire Lake Tahoe and the Valley. That alone is worth the trip. Be sure to bring the camera as there are a few pull outs.
While you are at Lake Tahoe, please say hello to a good portion of my MONEY!! I was very instrumental in helping to build those great casinos. I now live in North Carolina and don't get to Tahoe anymore. I usually settle for Reno. No comparison.

Thanks to all for the driving tip. Our plans ended up having us drive out of Tahoe. We took Highway 50 to Sacramento, the first hour or so out of South Lake Tahoe being very scenic, driving along mountains, forests and streams. Highway 50 is a one lane highway each way, but with passing lanes it was a quick, easy drive. Got onto the 80 at Sacramento and made it to San Francisco is just over 3.5 hours total. The drive over the Bay Bridge with the San Francisco skyline in the distance was also great. Tried the Red Hut Waffle Shop in Tahoe, excellent breakfasts, also Izzy's Burgers was terrific.
