Good $5 meal in Waikiki and Maui???

Can you recommend a place to get a good $5 meal in Waikiki or Maui? Nothing fancy, just good food.
Thank you.

THe only solution I can imagine is go to entertainment.com. They have a book of two for one coupons for Hawaii ( the book is about $15). That would stretch your food, show and activity budgets a great deal.

I think you can still get a "regular" meal at Aloha Plate in Lahaina (Maui) for around $5.00, maybe a little more. If not, they sell "mini-plates" (i.e. chicken & 1 scoop of rice) for around $3.50 or so. Other than that, there's always the #2 Combo at Mac Donald's. Aloha Plate is located at the west end of Front Street.

I normally eat lunch in Kihei, so most of my suggestions will be around Kihei. Aloha Mixed Plate is one good suggestion. You can get the Thai noodles for $3.95.

L&L Drive-In (all over the islands)

Life's a Beach in Kihei has a $5 lunch on weekdays.

Fran's Island Grill in Wailuku.

DH had a $6 tamale combo plate from Fernandos in Kihei yesterday.

Philmart, Kaiona Cafe, Maui Kitchen in Kihei have items for $4.95. Sausages at the Tiki Lounge are $6, up recently from $5. A lot of local places will have saimin or dry mein for a couple of bucks. Pita Paradise has pita pizzas on their pupu menu for about $5 that make a good lunch.

But, a lot of this will depend on your idea of good food. I am perfectly happy with Life's A Beach's $5 taco salad. Others might be disappointed since it is nothing sepcial--it's just a $5 lunch.

You might try the deli section of any of the big supermarkets. We go there to shop for food and end up in the deli section buying whatever they have that's just been put out. That way you can get more (or less) depending on how hungry you are. Plus you can take it back to your condo and sit on the lanai, eat and drink Mai Tais. 330 days and counting!!

Heck you could spend that on an ice cream at cold stone(!) but here's my best bargain meals from Waikiki (last month):

Lewers Street Loft and Lanai (220 block) breakfasts $3.50 to $4.75 and excellent "plate lunch" lunch and dinners $6.95

The food court at Ala Moana mall... Lahaina Chicken 1/2 roasted chicken with 3 sides $7.50.

Heaping bowls of fresh fruit from Henry's Place on Beach Walk $3.65.

Cold noodles, sushi, or sandwiches from any ABC store >$5.

Where in Waikiki are you staying? Do you only want to eat at places convenient to your hotel, by walking? There's a lot more to Oahu than just Waikiki......

On the east side of Waikiki, there are many eateries up Kapahulu Avenue. On the west side of Waikiki, you could get to Ala Moana Center for their food court.

We are staying at the Outrigger Reef. We will be using public transportation, but will go anywhere you suggest.
Thanks for your help.

aaaah OK. then why not venture into Chinatown? You'd want to take PakePorkChop's tour ([email protected]) and he can show you some very reasonable restaurants in the area. Dim sum is filling and cheap! On that same day you can tour Iolani Palace, the State Capitol, and Aloha Tower.

I'm not sure if they're exactly $5, but the Mexican food stand at the International Marketplace is pretty good, and I loved the ramen at Ezogiku, which is on the western end of Kalakaua. If you're out and around, try the chili with rice at Zippy's. There is also a Denny's or two and a few other coffee houses in Waikiki.

From Outrigger Reef my suggestions are exactly in your neighborhood!! Again, along Beach Walk 1st block in for Henry's Place fruit stand & across the street from that is a little bakery Patisserie that makes good sandwiches tucked in the corner back side of one of the hotels, and do not miss my recommendation of Loft & Lanai plate lunch (which also serves meals to the hotel workers nearby! appears to be kinda like the employee cafeteria).

Hey donnae b!!!
You have the best right there in the Outrigger Reef. The Shorebird restaurant is inexpensive, has a fantastic atmosphere, great salad bar, great entertainment, an out of this world view of the sunset, great drinks, a lot of fun, beautiful hostesses, in short, everything you would want plus good food. I guarantee, you will love it.

If you are willing to try a local style plate lunch, Rainbow Drive Inn, just outside of Waikiki in Kapahulu is a local favorite, and right about your $5 meal price. Obviously, it will be nothing fancy, just line up with the surfers, blue collar and office workers and enjoy a local icon. Its been around as long as I can remember, back to those summer days body surfing off the wall at Kuhio Beach.

Fort deRussy park is right there and a great place to picnic (both on the large expanse of grass and at trellis covered picnic tables).

Why I'm tooting my own horn here is I stayed only a few blocks from their particular hotel so my suggestions are as close as they will find.

Is the hamburger joint you're talking about Moose McGillicuddy's?
